Why Ruby Dobbs has been recast in Coronation Street

Ruby Dobbs (Billie Naylor), daughter of Tyrone Dobbs (Alan Halsall) and the late Kirsty Soames (Natalie Gumede) is set to be played by a new actor in a shake-up to the Coronation Street cast.

A significant new storyline is set to get underway that will see Ruby featured heavily in the search for the leading role in the Little Big Shotz Summer Spectacular.

Ruby Dobbs has been featured in the show since 2012, after she was born in the back room of the Rovers Return Inn, following her mother being attacked by Tina McIntyre (Michelle Keegan).

So, who is set to take over the character, and why has the role been recast?

Here is what you need to know.

Why has Ruby Dobbs been recast?

The original star, Macy Alabi, is starting high school this year, so she has chosen to leave the ITV soap, Metro.co.uk understands.

Billie Naylor will now take over the role.

Tonight (August 11), viewers will witness Billie’s debut as Ruby, who will observe her sister, Hope Dobbs (Isabella Flanagan), rehearsing for the solo performance before the major announcement for the Little Big Shotz show, confident of landing the part.

However, upon arrival at Little Big Shotz, Ruby is announced as the soloist by Glenda (Jodie Prenger) – with Hope as her backing singer.

Well-known for her temper, Hope is far from impressed at being cast as her sister’s backup. However, Ruby is understandably thrilled about the opportunity.

A spanner is thrown into the works when Glenda learns that the community centre is unavailable for the performance at the last minute.

Tai Chi instructor Gerry reveals that he has booked the community centre all day, leaving Glenda in a state of panic and unsure whether the performance can proceed.

In a stroke of good luck, Maria Connor (Samia Longchambon) suggests that she hold the Little Big Shotz Summer Spectacular in the Bistro, to which Glenda agrees enthusiastically.

Does this mean Ruby’s solo has been saved? What will Hope make of the news?

Tune in tonight to find out.
