The Falcon and the Winter Soldier is the next big Marvel original series coming to Disney+ this year. With WandaVision officially airing, a new era of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) has begun on the small screen in tandem with the big screen.
WandaVision is set to run for nine episodes, concluding its trippy, time-hopping adventure on March 5. While that’s plenty of time to get your Marvel fix, you might be wondering how soon after the finale Sam and Bucky’s adventure will kick off. Well, as ever, we’re always here to help.
‘The Falcon and the Winter Soldier’ is a more traditional MCU story
One of the very first Marvel Studios originals announced for Disney+, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier was originally pegged for an Aug. 2020 premiere. Then COVID-19 waltzed in and filming had to be postponed for months. Despite producer Kevin Feige’s claim that the pandemic didn’t delay things too significantly, it seems like the series was supposed to kick things off on Disney+ instead of WandaVision.
As it stands now, the series will premiere on Disney+ on March 19, only two weeks after WandaVision concludes. Unlike that series, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier is planned to run for only six episodes, according to an interview Feige gave to Collider, though they are expected to be closer to an hour in length each.
Unless it premieres with two episodes, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier should conclude on April 23. With Loki set to premiere sometime in May (not to mention Black Widow, if theatrical business picks up), MCU fans shouldn’t about any major content droughts anytime soon.
Disney+ will premiere six Marvel originals in 2021
Set in the aftermath of Avengers: Endgame, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier sees Sam Wilson and Bucky Barnes going off on a globetrotting mission to take down an anarchist group known as the Flag Smashers. Along the way, they will also have to contend with the return of Helmut Zemo (Daniel Brühl) and a new government-sanctioned Captain American knockoff, US Agent (Wyatt Russell).
In addition to WandaVision, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, and Loki, 2021 will see the premiere of three more Marvel originals on Disney. What If…? is an animated anthology series coming in the summer, with each episode exploring events from the films with key characters or moments changed drastically. It will feature voice work from many major MCU stars, including Chadwick Boseman’s final performance of any kind.
In late 2021, fans will get a double dose with the premieres of Ms. Marvel and Hawkeye. Based on one of the most beloved new characters from the last decade of comics, Ms. Marvel follows Kamala Khan (Iman Vellani), a Pakistani-American teen from Jersey City whose dormant powers are awakened in a freak accident.
Hawkeye, meanwhile, will see the return of the titular super-archer, Clint Barton (Jeremy Renner), as he battles crime syndicates in New York City. The series will also feature the debut of Barton’s protégé, Kate Bishop (Hailee Steinfeld), who eventually takes over the mantle of Hawkeye in the comics.
