'WandaVision' Episode 6 Referenced The Twins Comic Book Origins

WandaVision Episode 6 revisited the “sitcom” aspect a lot more after the last two episodes took viewers back into the real world a bit. And with that, a new character came more into play, and Wanda and Vision’s twins also took a bit more center stage. With that, their comic book origin was also referenced. [Spoiler alert: Spoilers ahead for WandaVision].

Evan Peters’ Pietro caused a lot of mischief in Westview

Episode 5 left off on such a cliffhanger; Pietro Maximoff was back, however, he wasn’t played by the same actor from Avengers: Age of Ultron, Aaron Taylor-Johnson. Instead, it was Evan Peters in the role, who portrayed Quicksilver, aka Peter Maximoff, in Fox’s most recent X-Men films.

So in WandaVision’s Episode 6, Peters’ Pietro is this slob-like, fun-loving uncle that eggs the kids on and causes a bit of havoc in the household. The decade for this episode is the 90s, although the only real indicators are the camcorder Billy is filming on. That’s mostly due to the fact that it’s the Halloween episode and no one can really be in “period” attire, per se.

Regardless, this “new” Pietro is a “man-child” as Billy calls him and Vision certainly isn’t very sold on him. He’s definitely acting a lot like the X-Men version of Quicksilver, albeit a bit more immature. Is he really Wanda’s Pietro from Sokovia, just in X-Men: Days of Future Past Peter Maximoff’s body? Or is that how it’s being presented to Wanda, but really this Pietro is something else in disguise?

He referenced Tommy and Billy’s comic book origin of coming from Mephisto, aka ‘Satan’

Whoever he ends up being, he made a very interesting reference to the twins, and it wasn’t lost on fans.

While Wanda, Pietro, and the twins are all out trick-or-treating, and Vision is looking for answers, Pietro yells for Tommy and Billy to “Unleash hell, demon spawn.” He’s jokingly hyping them up while they’re getting candy and, as viewers see a few minutes later, causing more mayhem for their neighbors.

However, it’s a direct reference to Wanda using a part of Mephisto’s soul to create Tommy and Billy with her magic in the comics. Mephisto is an extra-dimensional demon whose often referred to as “Satan” and looks like a massive devil. He rules over a hell-like realm and everything hell-related just goes along with him.

“God, everything in this show is meta to a level I don’t think I’ve ever seen in a television show before and I freaking love it,” one fan on Reddit wrote about the reference. “It’s like Deadpool wrote the script just to f*ck with our reality.”

There was also a small Kick-Ass reference too, in which Peters played Todd Haynes and actually, Taylor-Johnson played the title role of Dave Lizewski/Kick-Ass

“That felt like them 4th-walling their own references,” one fan said about that particular reference, when Wanda said the word.

There’s still a lot that fans don’t know

When Pietro said that line about “demon spawn,” it didn’t seem to elicit any type of response from Wanda, and fans still haven’t heard if that’s how she created her twins in this version. The Marvel Cinematic Universe always uses its comic book material, but also twists it and spins it to work in its own, MCU way. Plus, if Wanda did use Mephisto’s soul, she might not know it just yet.

It’s highly possible that Wanda’s twins won’t end up being parts of Mephisto’s essence. But whatever happens, it’s a nice reference to the comics. And, again, Pietro’s real identity and role in Wanda’s reality are unknown. She does try to test him, and he doesn’t fall for it. But he’s also a lot more “in” on her control of Westview than others, asking how she hid the kids. Which begs more questions on what he knows and who he really is.

Agnes also threw fans for a loop this episode, by seeming like she was under Wanda’s control. However, that might also be a ruse, considering she was very much aware of Wanda’s control before. Say what you want about WandaVision, but don’t say it won’t keep you guessing.
