Speaking to Good Morning Britain, Earl Spencer launched a full-on assault at the BBC for their conduct in gaining the worldwide exclusive with his late sister Princess Diana. He branded Martin Bashir as having “duped” his sister into the interview and said the actions by which the interview was carried out were “unforgivable”. He went on to lambast the Beeb for expecting them to “play it straight”.

Earl Spencer said: “I have got no problem at all – I would have been one hundred percent supportive if she had chosen to speak to anyone.

“It is absolutely her entitlement.

“But the circumstances in which she was duped into speaking.

“That set the tone for the conversation.”

Earl Spencer explained how “that is unforgivable” of the Beeb.

He added: “Especially coming from the BBC.

“I am sorry that they are held to a higher standard than others.

“But you know you do expect them to play it straight.”
