Daryl Dixon (played by Norman Reedus) is still trapped in Meridian as the 11th and final season of The Walking Dead lurches towards the end of the first of three thrilling instalments. A new teaser trailer released after Sunday night’s episode on AMC and Disney+ has teased an unlikely alliance to bring him back.

Maggie (Lauren Cohan) and Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) seem to be working together to rescue their friend from the Reapers in the next episode of The Walking Dead.

The zombie drama’s final season will continue this Sunday after Daryl’s reunion with Leah (Lynn Collins) led him directly into the waiting arms of the Reapers.

A deadly new faction of survivors, the Reapers, took over Maggie’s old home in Meridian, forcing her to return to the safety of her Alexandrian friends.

However, the next episode, ‘Promises Broken’, looks like it will take Maggie behind enemy lines to liberate Daryl from their enemy’s volatile leader, Pope (Ritchie Coster).

An official synopsis reads: “Maggie and Elijah learn a new survival tactic from Negan.

“Eugene’s group clears walkers to pay their fines. Yumiko interviews for an upper-class job.

“Daryl learns more about Leah and the Reapers; Gabriel encounters a man of God.”

Maggie’s plan also seems to involve a reluctant alliance with her husband’s killer, Negan.

While Yumiko (Eleanor Matsuura) and Eugene (Josh McDermitt) discover more about the mysterious Commonwealth, Maggie and her masked friend Elijah (Okea Eme-Akwari) prepare to take the Reapers by surprise.

The end of the latest promo reveals Maggie wearing the skin of a walker, much like the Alexandrians’ previous enemies the Whisperers.

Negan and the survivors were plagued by Alpha (Samantha Morton) and her army of zombie-impersonators throughout TWD’s ninth and tenth seasons.

Although they brought Alexandria to its knees, the Whisperers have also provided them with the perfect tactic to sneak Daryl out from under the nose of his captors.

Fans of the series are now keeping their fingers crossed Maggie and Negan’s tactic will prove successful when the show continues this weekend.

When the promo was released onto YouTube, viewers were clearly convinced some retribution was coming Pope’s way in episode seven.

User Jessie Swaby said: “This looks so good, I can’t wait to see Negan and Maggie lure the walkers to Meridian and rescue Daryl and Dog.”

While it’s unclear if Leah will escape with Daryl, fans are clearly more concerned whether Daryl’s canine companion will also make it out alive during the upcoming rescue mission.

“It’s great that Maggie & Negan will finally be together with 100% trust,” replied user SUB-ZERO.

“Looks like Negan & Maggie will control the herd of walkers & take it to Meridian. Can’t wait to see Negan beat the s**t out of Pope.”

And Mary Mandella speculated: “I am looking forward to this conversation between Negan and Maggie and then leading a horde to attack the Reapers.”

Maggie and Negan appear to be getting over their dark history together, although Maggie’s grudge could still sabotage their plan at a critical moment.

The Walking Dead season 11 continues Sundays on AMC and STAR on Disney+.
