The Sister is the latest psychological thriller on ITV. Across four episodes, Luther creator Neill Cross had viewers across the country hooked as they tried to solve the disappearance of Elise (played by Simone Ashley). Will there be another series of The Sister?

Will there be another series of The Sister?

At the moment, there has been no announcement regarding the future of The Sister.

The series only concluded tonight (Thursday, October 29) so it is still early days for news of the show’s future.

For now, it seems unlikely The Sister will be renewed for a second series, purely due to the nature of the show.

The four-part thriller was conceived as miniseries, which suggests it is unlikely to return in the future.

The Sister is also loosely based on Neil Cross’s book Burial, which served as an inspiration for the series.

The original book has no prequel or sequel novel, so there is little material to follow the show up with.

If The Sister is given the green light for a second series, fans can expect season two to air in 2021 on ITV.

The first series premiered in October 2020, so fans should expect a release date of October 2021 at the earliest, depending on the current coronavirus outbreak which could lead to further delays.

Elsewhere, The Sister creator Neil Cross may have to put The Sister season two on the backbench for now.

Speaking exclusively to Expess.co.uk and other press, Cross revealed some details about Luther’s return.

He said: “When pressed on the talks of a Luther film, Cross joked: “Ask Idris [Elba]. We are… I don’t know what I’m allowed to say, which is an answer in of itself.”

He added: “Words are my job and I’ve lost them all.”

The writer then alluded to the future of the show.

Cross said: “We want to make more Luther, we are going to make more Luther.

“The details, the hows, the whys and whatnot, that is all to come but we are going to make more.”

Speaking to Express.co.uk and other press after accepting his Virgin Media BAFTA Special Award in Summer 2020, Elba discussed his hopes of a Luther film.

He said: “I’d like to see it come to a film and that’s where I think we are heading towards a film.

“So I’m looking forward to making that happen. It is happening and I’m hoping it is going to be happening soon.

“With a film, the sky is the limit. You can be a little bit more bold.

“The storylines may be more international and up the scale.

“John Luther is always going to be John Luther.”
