The Pioneer Woman star Ree Drummond knows how to make a quick meal in a pinch. She gave her fans a lesson on creating easy lunches and dinners without sacrificing taste. One quick recipe she likes to make are wafflewiches. Here’s how the Food Network cook creates this unique sandwich.
Ree Drummond’s turkey bacon wafflewich
What are wafflewiches? Drummond says wafflewiches are sandwiches made in a wafflemaker. The Accidental Country Girl says she doesn’t like to make “one boring sandwich.” Instead, she prefers to make four different sandwiches at the same time.
One version of the wafflewich Drummond likes to make is a turkey bacon sandwich on wheat bread with Dijon mustard. She includes onions, cheese, and spinach for added flavor.
Ree Drummond’s Reuben wafflewich
The next waffle sandwich Drummond makes is a Reuben sandwich. She starts with marbled rye bread (she likes to call it “swirly” rye bread). Drummond then adds Thousand Island dressing, two pieces of Swiss cheese, pastrami, and sauerkraut. She says she loves a good Reuben sandwich.
Ree Drummond’s roast beef wafflewich
Drummond applies horseradish mayonnaise to give the sandwich a bit of “heat.” She says she loves heat from horseradish. “I love horseradish heat because it’s not on your tongue or in your mouth,” says Drummond on The Pioneer Woman. “It gets up in your nose and it makes you feel alive,” she jokes. Next, she adds a few slices of provolone cheese, roast beef, and pepperoncini.
Ree Drummond’s fluffernutter wafflewich
Finally, Drummond makes a fluffernutter sandwich with cinnamon bread. She explains that a fluffernutter is a sandwich made with peanut butter and marshmallow cream. She describes the sandwich as one of those “comfort foods from childhood.”
Fluffernutter sandwiches usually just have peanut butter and marshmallow cream, but Drummond adds a banana to this recipe. This is a big deal for Drummond because she hates bananas.
“I’m going to go against my belief system and add some sliced bananas,” says Drummond on her cooking show. “I hate bananas with a fiery passion, but I was afraid that the fluffernutter would not have enough volume to hold up to the rest of the sandwiches. And I couldn’t really think of anything else to put in here.”
The secret to a tasty grilled sandwich
What’s the secret to a grilled sandwich that makes your taste buds beg for more? Drummond revealed her secret to a tasty grilled sandwich is butter. “One secret to any grilled sandwich is you’ve gotta get a lot of butter on the bread,” says Drummond. “Because that makes it get really golden and crisp. And it’s the whole purpose of a grilled sandwich, let’s face it.”
Drummond places each sandwich into a well in the waffle maker. She makes sure to put the side of the sandwich with the butter face down so it can make the bread golden and crisp. Before closing the waffle iron, Drummond places another “generous” application of butter on the top side of each sandwich. She sets the waffle iron on the medium-low setting and cooks the sandwiches for 2 ½ to 3 minutes.
