After season three of the Hulu show The Handmaid’s Tale ended on a massive cliffhanger, with June Osborne (played by Elisabeth Moss) being left for dead, fans have been wondering what more next season has to throw at her. Since production finally wrapped after many delays and a first teaser was released, fans have got a lot of material to formulate new theories.

A number of fans have put two and two together after the new promo to tip June’s daughter Hannah (Jordana Blake) getting imprisoned and tortured for her mother’s multiple wrong-doings.

The theory stems from a moment at the end of season three in which Serena Waterford (Yvonne Strahovski) and Commander Fred Waterford (Joseph Fiennes) meet and between them stands a lamp in the shape of a womb.

Could that possibly be hinting that Serena might be pregnant? Several fans on forum site Reddit believe so, predicting that in the world of Gilead, that will give her massive political leverage for her plans.

Finding herself a prisoner in Canada, held for the crimes she and her husband committed, a pregnancy could give her room to argue for her release.

Serena could also be able to trade her release for June’s, who is still trying to break out of Gilead at the end of season three.

However, while the Waterfords are powerful political figures in Gilead and the nation would have every interest in having them safely returned, they wouldn’t just release a handmaid who was so close to them.

On Reddit, one fan theorised that June would be “processed out” so to speak, in an attempt to get as much out of her about the Resistance and make sure she won’t reveal anything about Gilead to the Canadians.

However, while June has already suffered pain and torture, the one thing that would break her is her daughter Hannah, who she is desperately trying to bring to Canada with her.

In the trailer, Hannah is shown held captive in a glass box, with June on the outside being able to see her but not touch her.

Knowing Gilead has Hannah and can hurt her at any moment, June would have to think twice about revealing anything that would hurt them as she is forcefully brought to Canada without her daughter in order for the Waterfords to be released.

Adding to the theory, eagle-eyed viewers also pointed out that the finale of each season was focused on someone making it out of Gilead: Moira (Samira Wiley) in season one, Emily (Alexis Bledel) and baby Nichole in season two, and the children in season three.

Could it finally be June’s turn in season four?

While fleeing to Canada and being reunited with Luke (O-T Fagbenle) has been what June has been striving for since the beginning, knowing that Hannah is still being held captive in Gilead will give her much to still do in season four.

Other fans in the comments agreed with this theory with one saying: “I think you’re onto something.”

“Shivers down my spine. I wish this season would hurry up already,” added another.

A third commented: “Great theory, works well. Excited to see.”

Another commentator elaborated on this premise, recalling that at one point in the show: “They explicitly threaten something about ‘The sins of the mother will be visited on the child’ and threaten Hannah could be stripped of her elite status and made a Handmaid/Martha.”

Currently, Hannah lives under the name Agnes as the daughter of Commander McKenzie and his wife.

Another hypothesis would see her being married off: “The latter particularly comes to mind since the trailer has that VERY YOUNG woman in wife teal.”

McKenna Grace, 14, was cast in the new season a teenage Wife.

The Handmaid’s Tale will return on April 28 on Hulu and on Channel 4.
