The Crown season 5: Is Imelda Staunton replacing Olivia Colman as the Queen?

In the first two seasons of The Crown, actress Claire Foy portrayed the role of Queen Elizabeth II. For seasons three and four, Olivia Colman was cast in the role of the Queen but another new ensemble of actors will be introduced for the fifth season. So will actress Imelda Staunton replace Colman?

Is Imelda Staunton replacing Olivia Colman as the Queen on The Crown season 5?

Staunton has a long list of credits so if you don’t recognise her name straight away, it is almost guaranteed you would recognise her from one of the films she has starred in.

In the past decade, she has played Professor Umbridge in Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, appeared in Maleficent, Paddington and Shakespeare in Love.

The streaming service has not confirmed if Staunton will be cast in the fifth and sixth series.

Speaking to Good Housekeeping, a spokesman said: “We are currently filming season four of The Crown but have not commissioned any further seasons as yet, therefore any news on casting remains pure speculation.”

So while it has been widely reported she would be taking over the role, an actress has yet to be cast.

However, Staunton could make the right royal fit going by one of her most recent performances.

Staunton joined the cast of ITV period drama Downton Abbey for the franchise’s movie.

The actress played Lady Bagshaw, a lady-in-waiting to Queen Mary (Geraldine James) cousin of Robert Crawley’s (Hugh Bonneville) late father.

In real life, Staunton is married to Downton’s butler Carson played by Jim Carter.

Talking about her character’s relationship with Dowager Countess Violet Crawley (Dame Maggie Smith), Staunton told the Mirror: “With Maggie Smith, of course, there are going to be loads of one-liners. “Maggie and I have great stuff. There’s no fisticuffs – but we don’t like each other. I’ve got things to do in that story. I have issues.”

Season three of The Crown was released last month with a brand new cast including Colman and actor Tobias Menzies as Prince Philip.

Speaking at the show’s premiere, Colman said: “I have always been a fan of the Queen.

“I think as a human being she is marvellous and amazing. She is like a book and my job is to do justice to the part.

“The more I researched for this part, the more I started respecting her. She has gone through so much. It is really amazing.”

She will return for season four alongside a few other new cast members.
