The Chase host Bradley Walsh welcomed four new contestants to the ITV quiz show on Thursday afternoon and viewers were shocked when the first player, Andrea, took the lowest offer from the Chaser. Despite reassurances from Bradley and Jenny that she was doing the right thing, it was viewers online that were furious at the decision, especially coming from the first contestant.
ITV host Bradley Walsh helped four new contestants Andrea, Rosie, Daniel, and Aodhan on The Chase on Thursday afternoon as they battled Chaser Jenny ‘The Vixen’ Ryan for the jackpot prize.
However, the team failed to gain a strong start as Andrea accepted the lowest offer from the Chaser, disheartening her fellow players and angering fans.
After racking up £3,000 in her cash-builder, Andrea stunned everyone by accepting the lower offer of £1,000.
Andrea was still beaten by The Vixen, and viewers were quick to take to Twitter following her decision.
One fan immediately got the ball rolling, tweeting: “Low offer taker already. #thechase.”
One viewer tweeted: “At least if she’d gone middle rather than low, she’d have left with some self respect!! #TheChase.”
Other fans shared their sentiments with another adding: “Seat 1 goes low, what a start [sad emoji] #TheChase.”
Fans then urged Jenny to catch Andrea, with another writing: “First person up taking the low offer. That’s sly that. #TheChase – go get her Jenny!!”
As well as the low offer of £1,000, Jenny offered her a high offer of £23,000
“I never thought I’d do this but I’m going to take the one,” Andrea said to Bradley.
Bradley quickly responded, assuring her: “Totally understand, one it is”.
The Vixen also reassured her, by saying: “I think that’s very smart Andrea”.
However, loyal fans of The Chase weren’t best pleased at her decision to go low.
She failed to get the first three questions right, with one viewer tweeting: “Too painful to watch had to go and make a coffee #thechase.”
Another wrote: “Crikey she really doesn’t know much. No loss in the final chase apart from the extra point she’d bring. #thechase.”
People continued to fume online about Andrea’s performance, with a user on Twitter conlcuding: “Goes low for seat 1(!!), forgets what ‘pious’ means, gets caught, she was just not destined to get anywhere really #thechase.”
Unfortunately, only Daniel and Rosie made it to the Final Chase, where Jenny beat them both despite a two-step head start.
The two only answered seven correct questions, but audiences were quick to point out that Rosie didn’t give Daniel a chance with the buzzer as he didn’t answer any questions at all.
After Andrea’s defeat, Jenny backed her decision by saying to her: “Even though I caught her she did the right thing”.
However, some fans believed that it was Bradley’s mispronunciation of “impious” that caused Andrea to miss an answer.
One viewer commented: “‘Impy-us’, Brad? Never heard it pronounced like that before. #thechase”.
The Chase airs on weekdays on ITV at 5pm.
