Heughan said: “A jobbing actor in the UK and in London and finding my feet there.
“I was working pretty much part-time, full-time to support myself whether it was in a bar or delivering sandwiches on a bicycle or working in the NHS. I worked in everything. I worked in Harrods. I did all these things while I was doing theatre.
“I did quite a lot of theatre up in Scotland, so I would come back up to Scotland and very lucky to do those to keep me going but you know, I was trying to find my way.
“I kept going to America. I would go out for pilot season and test on stuff and get flown out.
“I remember being completely penniless living in North London and yet I did a tape and got flown out to test on Tron.
“They fly your first class and [you get driven] in a really nice car and I remember I had 20 dollars and I was terrified because I knew I had to tip the driver but it was my only 20 dollars. I remember giving it to him.”
However, Heughan said those formative moments were important to his work ethic and attitude to his career.
He said: “But they [those experiences] teach you. I did a whole pilot season. I couldn’t drive at the time, so I went to every audition by bus in LA.
“So I spent my whole life on buses in LA, it was tough, really tough but I guess it’s what teaches you and makes you appreciate when you do learn to drive and you can afford to get a car.”
