Queen of the South’s latest series came out on USA Network in 2019 and was released on streaming service Netflix earlier this year. The story of Teresa Mendoza’s (played by Alice Braga) rise to power will continue as filming for the drama’s fifth season is underway. There could be some major changes ahead in the new series as Teresa continues to build her drug empire.
WARNING: This article contains spoilers from Queen of the South.
When Queen of the South first started, Teresa was fleeing from Mexico to get away from Don Epifanio (Joaquim de Almeida) who was trying to kill her.
She was then taken by Camila Vargas’ (Veronica Falcon) men where she was forced to work as a drug mule in Dallas.
But as Teresa began to learn more about the drug trade and started to make a name for herself, she was able to break free and start running her own business.
This meant setting up elsewhere and so Teresa relocated to New Orleans along with her trusted followers, including James Valdez (Peter Gadiot) and Pote Galvez (Hemky Madera).
Where will Queen of the South season 5 be set?
While the majority of Teresa’s business has taken place in New Orleans, she has been expanding to other areas.
Even though Boaz Jimenez (Joseph Thomas Campos) was the leader of the Jimenez Cartel and temporarily in charge of the Sinaloa Cartel, he is now working for Teresa.
He is running her Miami branch, ensuring everything goes to plan there while she is back in New Orleans.
In season four, fans got to see Teresa make another deal with a fellow queenpin.
Teresa was keen to further her reach by expanding the business to New York.
So she ended up shaking hands with Oksana Volkova (Vera Cherny) who has ties with the Russian mob in the Big Apple.
Could Teresa’s new links to NYC lead to her setting up shop there or will she stay put in New Orleans?
Co-showrunner Dailyn Rodriguez has explained how season five is going to feature all three locations.

Queen of the South season 5 release date, cast, trailer, plot [RELEASE DATE]
Speaking to Express.co.uk, Rodriguez said: “We fake some stuff in New Orleans for Miami and then we found a house that worked for El Gordo’s [place] and then we CGI-d the water to blue. Basically, that’s kind of what we did.
“Then we did do some on-location stuff at the end of the season when she’s on ocean drive – that we actually shot in Miami.
“As of now, whatever we plan to shoot in other places, we’ll kind of go into the Russian storyline with Oksana.
“So, we’ll fake a little bit of New York in New Orleans and we’ll fake Miami in New Orleans.”
Back in July, Rodriquez did say they had no plans to film on location thanks to the pandemic.
This may have changed since shooting began at the beginning of November but to keep the cast and crew safe, the decision could have remained the same.
A release date hasn’t yet been announced for Queen of the South season five.
