Prince Philip gave up watching EastEnders after one episode because he couldn’t understand a word the cast were saying.
According to The Sun, The Duke Of Edinburgh told Roy Evans actor Tony Caunter that he struggled to make sense of the Cockney accents on the BBC One serial on the one occasion he tuned in.
‘Saw it once,’ Sir Philip said to Roy, the publication reports. ‘Everybody was shouting at each other.
‘I couldn’t understand a bloody word!’
Prince Philip visited the EastEnders set at Elstree Studios with Queen Elizabeth II in 2001 and the couple were given a tour by Pauline Fowler star Wendy Richard, who died in 2009, and Peggy Mitchell actress Dame Barbara Windsor, who passed away earlier this month.
Former cast member Shaun Williamson, who played Barry Evans in the BBC soap for 10 years, recalled the historic moment in his autobiography, A Matter Of Facts.
The 55-year-old actor shared how the royal asked legendary Ian Beale star Adam Woodyatt: ‘Are you an actor or an operator?’
Shaun also performed a scene for Prince Philip and the Queen, and wrote of the experience: ‘We were a bundle of nerves but it went without a hitch, then we lined up to meet the Queen and Philip.’
