Ozark season 4: The 3 reasons why Ben Davis needs to return from the dead and how he can

Ozark: Ben Davis gets emotional as he speaks to taxi driver

Ben Davis (played by Tom Pelphrey) had, without doubt, one of the most heartbreaking storylines in the penultimate season of Ozark earlier this year. Introduced to the Netflix drama as Wendy Byrde’s (Laura Linney) fiercely loyal and honest yet reckless brother, Ben quickly became a favourite among viewers thanks to his opposition the Byrdes’ illegal money laundering enterprise and romance with Ruth Langmore (Julia Garner).

Sadly, however, Ben was seemingly killed after an explosive outburst at wicked lawyer Helen Pierce (Janet McTeer) in which he exposed the entire cartel’s operation in front of her daughter Erin (Madison Thompson).

Wendy and Marty (Jason Bateman) saw no other choice but to take Ben out of the picture as they recognised the threat he posed to the entire criminal enterprise.

Enter hitman Nelson (Nelson Bonilla) who arrived at an isolated diner where Ben had been taken to by his sister and delivered the fatal blow.

However, fans never saw Nelson pull the trigger or Ben’s actual body, leading some to believe he may not actually be as dead as he seems. Read on for the three reasons why Ben needs to be alive in season four.

The Ruth Langmore romance

Ever since she arrived on the scene in the second episode of Ozark, the sharp-tongued Ruth became one of the show’s best-loved characters.

However, she’s had one of the most tumultuous and rough few years on the show; forced into killing her uncle Russ (Marc Menchaca), seeing her father Cade (Trevor Long) killed off by Wendy’s orders, and being beat to within an inch of her life by Frank Cosgrove Jr (Joseph Sikora).

And as season three came to a close, she was dealt the heartbreaking blow that the love of her life Ben had now been murdered as well.

However, there was a slightly optimistic turn at the end of the third season as she finally patched things up with cousin Wyatt (Charlie Tahan).

But given just how much turmoil the young Langmore has been put through, surely she deserves a few more turns of fortune.

And what better way to put a smile on Ruth’s face and keep warm the hearts of viewers than seeing her reunite with the only man she’s declared her love for?

Keeping Jonah on track

For the past few seasons of Ozark, fans have watched Jonah (Skylar Gaertner) grow from a slightly odd kid into a ballsy and rather intelligent teen.

From pocketing some of the Byrdes’ cash for himself as well as standing up to local bully Tommy (Tyler Chase), Jonah’s not one who’s afraid of taking matters into his own hands.

However, there are two people who’ve popped into his life that have managed to keep him in check and form unlikely bonds: Buddy (Harris Yulin) and Ben.

But heading into the fourth and final run, both are deceased and the last fans saw of Jonah he was a ball of rage armed with a rifle and shooting aimlessly within his own home.

Desperate to avenge his uncle’s death, it looks like he could bring down Marty and Wendy’s entire operation in season four.

That’s unless Ben miraculously returns to stop him, something which would undoubtedly go down well with the fandom considering many fans are rooting for an ultimate showdown between the Byrdes, Navarro Cartel, Ruth Langmore and Darlene Snell (Lisa Emery) – not Jonah on a one-man mission.

Give Nelson his comeuppance

Hitman Nelson (Nelson Bonilla) has gotten away with killing one too many faces in the Ozarks following his introduction in season two.

While he was involved in one of the show’s biggest twists by killing Helen, he also took out adorable and hilarious therapist Sue (Marylouise Burke).

Add Ben into the mix and fans would welcome the chance to see the cartel’s murderous soldier get to meet his maker.

And who better to deliver a fateful blow than Ben considering Nelson was supposed to have killed him?

Fans will have to wait until season four is released to find out if an unlikely return for Ben will come to fruition – but it’s not looking good following showrunner Chris Mundy’s insistence he is indeed dead.

However, this is Ozark and anything can happen in the show’s fourth and final season.

Ozark is available to stream on Netflix now.
