Netflix series Ozark left fans reeling from shock at the end of season three. In a twist no one saw coming, Helen Pierce (played by Janet McTeer) was killed off by cartel hitman Nelson (Nelson Bonilla). Marty (Jason Bateman) and Wendy Byrde (Laura Linney) were left covered in the dead lawyer’s blood and brains as they were embraced by mob boss Omar Navarro (Felix Solis).

How was Helen Pierce death scene filmed in Ozark?

The moment was certainly unexpected as there was a clear shift in power.

Up until now, it looked like the no-nonsense attorney was going to have the upper hand as she made plans to take over Byrde Enterprises and bump off Marty and Wendy.

But Helen’s plans were well and truly scuppered when she was killed off with Navarro choosing the Byrdes thanks to their unique skillset.

The Byrdes had been building up a rapport with Navarro over season three and Helen’s execution sealed the deal with the couple now working directly for the drug kingpin.

Speaking at Paley Fest, the stars of Ozark opened up about shooting Helen’s death scene, which had to be done in one shot due to the technical nature of the moment.

British actress McTeer opened up about filming her character’s death scene and reflected on having one shot to get the take.

She explained: “I had really great fun. You really enjoy doing stuff like that. I’m very fortunate I get lots of great lines, I get to do lots of great stuff psychological, emotional, intelligent, credible lines with all the stuff you have to think about.

“But really it’s fun when you get to do all that blood and guts. I loved it.”

McTeer went on to say: “The funniest thing was – I was on the floor on my mat at this point dead – looking up and seeing Laura and Jason covered in these guts and continuing to act. It was so funny, so wonderful, so much fun to shoot.”

Actor and director Bateman also spoke about the moment, saying: “We knew our best shot at getting a genuinely surprised reaction from Laura and I would be on take one.

“Maybe take two, three, four, we start to get prepared and less shocked that we would be splattered with red oatmeal and what not.

“If all worked camera-wise as a composition and all that stuff then maybe we wouldn’t need to do another [take].

“As Janet said, the reset and wash our hair and all that stuff would take a half hour or something.”

McTeer admitted she would miss no longer being part of Ozark now her character had been bumped off.

She confessed she would miss “everything” but said the heat was something she could live without.

The star said: “Atlanta in the summer in a silk blouse trying to look super cool is really hard and that’s really not fun.”

While her co-stars said they were really going to miss having McTeer on set.

McTeer’s character wasn’t the only victim of season three with Tom Pelphrey’s Ben Davis also getting killed off following a brutal order from Wendy.

Fans had been speculating Ben may have survived because the moment of his death wasn’t depicted.

All viewers saw was Marty incinerating a body, leading many to hope he could be alive.

Sadly, Ozark showrunner Chris Mundy confirmed Ben was very much six feet under despite the theories.
