Sam Heughan and Starz have finally revealed the latest release updates from the set of the highly anticipated sixth season of Outlander. While the star shared some exciting news on his Instagram feed, an official announcement from the network may disappoint some fans.
New episodes of the steamy historical drama Outlander are officially coming in early 2022.
Jamie (played by Sam Heughan) and Claire Fraser (Caitriona Balfe) are set to make their long awaited return to screens almost two years after the last instalment wrapped up on Starz.
As filming reaches its final stages in Scotland, Sam Heughan took to his personal Instagram page with a thrilling announcement from the set.
He also revealed an intimate first look at Claire and Jamie in a new still from the upcoming season.
Heughan captioned his post: “More great news on #worldoutlanderday : THATS A WRAP!!!!
“Well… on Friday. Season 6 @outlander_starz is FINISHED!”
Following last year’s extensive coronavirus delays, the Scottish star’s new post has confirmed filming for season six will officially be done by the end of the week.
The post also revealed a somewhat surprising layout for the continuation of the series.
He continued: “We have an extended length first ep for you too.
“This season will be 8eps with an extended season 7….Much to celebrate!”
When Outlander finally returns, potentially in January or February next year, viewers will be treated to a feature length season premiere.
However, some fans expressed disappointment with the news that season six will feature just eight episodes, compared to previous outings 12-16 episodes.

One crushed fan commented on Heughan’s post: “Just 8 episodes?!! I’m heartbroken already.”
Due to extensive COVID restrictions on the film and television industries, Outlander producers realised they wouldn’t be able to deliver a full season order.
Thankfully, most fans were simply glad the series is finally on its way to making its glorious comeback at the start of next year.
A second follower replied: “Whoo Hoo!! Can’t wait for Season 6. I need my Outlander fix.”
Meanwhile, showrunner Matthew B Roberts has assuaged fans’ concerns by confirming season seven will be double the length of the next entry.
In a statement, he explained: “Filming in 2021 has presented an unprecedented set of challenges which led us to the decision to truncate the season in order to bring the fans the most vibrant and dynamic season as soon as possible.
“Dinna fash, we will then film an extended season 7 with 16 episodes next year as life returns to normalcy.”
Filming on season seven is hoped to get back on track as quickly as possible to ensure the next bout of ‘Droughtlander’ isn’t as painfully long as the current hiatus.
Outlander seasons 1-5 are available to stream on STARZ and Amazon Prime Video.
