Nigella Lawson reveals how she trains for boozing before holidays

Practice. Perseverance. Hard work. That’s what Nigella Lawson does before a holiday.

But not silly exercises or diets – Nigella trains for boozing.

“I’m not very good at alcohol,” admits the TV chef.

“I’ve never been a big drinker… I do like it.

“It’s being out of practice. So last year, I went into training a bit because I went to Italy for three days, and so the two weeks before that I started having a glass of wine a bit each week to get used to it.”

Speaking to Jessie Ware on her Table Manners podcast, Nigella, 58, admits she struggles with hangovers: “It does something to me but I think maybe that’s an age thing… after a certain age, you don’t deal with wine as well.

“I feel that I’m quite an anxious person and drink can really exacerbate that anxiety.

“At first it gets rid of it all. But then afterwards, that horrible tight feeling of worry, and just generally not feeling quite right.”

She quoted Kingsley Amis as saying there are two hangovers: the physical and the metaphysical. “And the metaphysical hangover is worse.”

No training can help with that.
