Natalie Cassidy reveals that Sonia's sexuality is fluid in EastEnders

EastEnders star Natalie Cassidy has stated that Sonia Fowler’s sexuality is ‘complicated’, adding that the character can fall for anyone.

Sonia has had relationships with both men and women over the years. Love interests include Martin Fowler and Tina Carter.

Following a long-term relationship with Martin, she developed feelings for colleague Naomi Julien (Petra Letang) in 2005, and the two embarked on an affair.

Natalie left the show two years later, shortly after the affair storyline.

The actress denied that her departure at the time was due to claims that Sonia’s relationship with a woman was ‘implausible’, defending her character’s decision to explore her sexuality.

‘Sonia’s sexuality is complicated,’ she told The Guardian in a new interview. ‘People come up to me and say: “Oh, you’re not a lesbian any more.” But the truth is that Sonia can fall for anyone, man or woman.’

Natalie recently described Sonia as ‘part of the fabric of [EastEnders]’ when speaking to at the British Soap Awards, adding that she hopes ‘she will always stick around.’

‘I’m so excited!’ she enthused, discussing the future of the show under the helm of new boss Chris Clenshaw.

‘He’s been with us before, he’s very passionate about the show, he loved it inside and out, seriously.

‘So for me I just always want someone who loves the show as much as I do. It’s just lovely to be in a place where we’re starting afresh.

‘I’ve watched the show go through many different sets and different times and this is just another one and I’m really excited.’

It was revealed earlier this month that five characters, including Lola Pearce, Stuart Highway and Peter Beale, had been axed from the show.

‘It’s soap,’ said Natalie, commenting on the departures. ‘It’s what happens.

‘To get good stories, you need people to exit and you need people to come in. It’s just the way of the show.’

EastEnders airs Monday to Thursday at 7:30pm on BBC One.
