MTV Movie & TV Awards Promo
The MTV Awards baffled fans on Sunday night with an opening featuring intended host Drew Barrymore reprising her role as Josie ‘Grossie’ Geller.
Barrymore revived the character in an opening skit in which the Never Been Kissed hero crossed over with several movies and shows up for nomination this year.
However, viewers were left confused by the decision to air the introduction as the actress and TV personality confirmed she would be pulling out of hosting duties due to the 2023 writers strike earlier this week.
@GoBiggLexy tweeted: “Drew Barrymore didn’t host the #MTVAwards but they are still playing her clips and have a weird voiceover host.”
@cmisadan asked: “Love how they’re still airing Drew Barrymore’s cutscenes for the MTV Awards even though the whole thing is just a clip show now.”
@swiftlydunphy wrote: “Lol these commercials that Drew Barrymore recorded before she decided not to host anymore don’t make sense now.”
“Couldn’t resist piping to see what #MTVAwards doing without Drew Barrymore as a host,” @TaimurODar said. “The result is painful.”
During the intro, Barrymore met stars like Jennifer Coolidge and Jenna Ortega who were up for Golden Popcorn trophies for The White Lotus and Wednesday.
The most baffling moment came when the talk show host came up against the titular Cocaine Bear from the comedy-action film before they proceeded to frolic and roll around on the ground.

Confused viewer @pinchnyc tweeted: “Sorry did @MTVAwards just open with a girl making out with a bear?
“What is happening??? That is illegal on earth right? #MTVAwards #mtv #DrewBarrymore so confused.”
Twitter user @thenoasletter wrote: “The MTV Movie awards is going forward with a pre-strike pretape (it’s Josie Grossie from Never Been Kissed in several movies and TV shows trying to be kissed, and then, you guessed it, mauled by the Cocaine Bear).
“Keeping all the Drew Barrymore pretapes in the show is a wild choice.”
Later in the show, the host also crossed paths with Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling for a sneak peek at the highly anticipated Barbie movie.
The awards ceremony has received a mixed response from fans as a whole as the live show was scrapped due to the writers’ strike.
Winners sent in pre-taped speeches throughout the night and viewers were also treated to clips and musical performances from the awards’ history.
The MTV Awards are available to watch on MTV and Paramount+.
