Jane McDonald hailed ‘fantastic’ as she replaces Schofield at soap awards

Jane McDonald opens the British Soap Awards as host

Jane McDonald took to the stage to host ITV’s British Soap Awards after Phillip Schofield was axed following his admission about having an affair with a younger colleague. 

She was met with a huge round of applause from the audience and she thanked them for welcoming her to such a prestigious event. 

Looking stunning in a gold sequin dress, she owned the stage with confidence as she introduced a montage showcasing all of the soaps. 

Viewers flocked to Twitter to show their support, with Cam saying: “Obsessed with the high camp of Jane McDonald.”

Liz Little said: “@TheJaneMcDonald comes across like the most popular headteacher opening the most fabulous school prom. I think she’s doing a fantastic job. #britishsoapawards.”

Ruth Clark added: “I love @TheJaneMcDonald” while Jodi shared: “I love our Jane McDonald #BritishSoapAwards.”

Rich shared: “Jane McDonald really is a breath of fresh air, isn’t she.”

Stephen Patterson concluded: “Obsessed with Jane McDonald already and we’re only one ad break in. #britishsoapawards2023”

Jane took over presenting duties from Phillip Schofield after he quit ITV amid his affair bombshell.

Ahead of the awards, she said: “Oh my god…..everyone knows how much I love my soaps.

“This year I’ve been honoured to be mentioned in Corrie, EastEnders and Emmerdale, so this is just a dream come true.

“I can’t wait to see all our wonderful soap nominees and celebrate all their hard work with them – roll on the awards, I can’t wait.”

The awards were held at the weekend with Coronation Street bagging the most wins on the night.

They took home six accolades including Best Single Episode, Scene of the Year and Best Newcomer.

EastEnders took home four awards, with Emmerdale’s Mark Charnock winning an Outstanding Achievement Award.
