After HBO’s Game of Thrones came to an end in 2019, Yara Greyjoy star Gemma Whelan landed an exciting new role in the up and coming series The Tower. Ahead of its release, the actress opened up about her role and shared concerns about real-life police officers.

Gemma Whelan is best known for playing the no-nonsense promising ruler Yara Greyjoy on HBO’s thrilling series Game of Thrones.

While her character served the controversial ending, Gemma went on to star in other shows including The Tower.

Gemma landed the role of DCI Sarah Collins, a detective thrown straight into the deep end after a number of people fall to their deaths from an East London tower block.

Ahead of the show’s premiere last Tuesday, the actress spoke to the Digital Spy and was asked about Sarah Everard’s murder and its links to serving police officer.

She shared: “I was incredibly impressed with how the police went about finding out who had committed the murder.

“But God forbid I ever get stopped by the police, I’d be nervous now — I think most of us would be,” Gemma admitted.

This comes after the tragic death of Sarah Everard, who was brutally murdered by a serving police officer, who used his occupation to overpower the 33-year-old.

The murder caused an uproar across the nation about the safety of women.

The Tower will follow DCI Collins as she investigates the deaths of a veteran beat cop and a teenage girl after the fall from a tower block.

This left a five-year-old child and a recently employed police officer, Lizzie Griffiths, on the roof, only for them to mysteriously disappear.

While Collins focused on locating Lizzie before the situation got worse, she was also able to discover the grizzly detail at the time.

As the series progresses, Collins and Griffiths later become the central characters in three books written by former Met officer London, Katie London.

Elsewhere in the interview, Gemma revealed the preparation for this role included meeting author Kate.

She explained: “I started reading Post Mortem but I was getting confused between what was in The Tower’s script and in the book — especially since I had so many lines to learn!

“But it was great to talk to Kate about her life as a detective in the Met,” Gemma added.

She revealed: “We discussed how far Sarah is into her career and what she might find shocking — like what happens in the opening scenes.

The actress added: “We talked about police procedure and Kate’s experiences as a detective.

“It’s morbidly fascinating hearing about someone’s experience of attending a crime scene, a stabbing or a murder — and how they process it,” she concluded.

The first episode of The Tower premiered on ITV One last weekend and viewers got an insight into the tragic opening scene.

Fans will have to stay tuned to see what DCI Collins uncovers about the Towers deadly past.

The Towers continues Tuesdays on ITV One at 9pm.

Game of Thrones seasons 1-8 are available to stream on HBO.
