Escape to the Chateau had been absent from TV viewing for a year and fans were starting to get restless. But fear not as Dick Strawbridge and Angel Adoree have returned for season eight on Channel 4, providing more helpful DIY tips and tricks than ever before. While they may have settled into their new life abroad, it wasn’t always this way for the eccentric couple.
Dick and Angel were previously living in a cramped flat in Southend-on-sea before making the big move.
Speaking to Psychologies, Angel said the idea came after they had a romantic getaway to France in 2011.
She remembered watching the movie A Good Year when Russell Crowe’s character moves abroad and gets a fresh perspective on life.
Angel commented: “After we watched it, Dick said: ‘We could buy a house like this for next to nothing and live nicely off my pension and the odd job.'”
How much did Dick and Angel pay for their chateau?
Dick and Angel bought the French 19th Century Chateau de La Motte Husson in 2015 for just £380,000 post-tax, according to their website.
With the property comes 45 bedrooms, 12 acres of land as well as their own moat.
But while it may seem like the absolute dream, there have been various hiccups along the way.
The building itself may be beautiful but when they first purchased the property, the chateau had stood empty for four decades.
So Dick and Angel’s new home had no electricity, heating or running water.
As part of Escape to the Chateau, the couple have been renovating the property for the past five years.
With so many rooms to contend with and the grounds to look after, it will still be quite some time before they can say everything is completed.
Through their Channel 4 show promoting their home, Dick and Angel have been able to make a lot of extra money to help with these refurbishments.

The chateau is primarily used as a wedding venue but if you want to tie the knot there then it will set you back a pretty penny.
Weddings at Chateau de La Motte Husson could cost you anywhere between £19,000 and £38,000.
It won’t be cheap to stay at the chateau either as this is priced at around £5,000.
Even just visiting the grounds for the day will cause a dent in your bank account.
A day tour around the chateau includes transport to and from Laval, lunch with wine, a tour of the grounds and an afternoon tea to round off the day.
This will cost you £230 so it is by no means a cheap day out.
However, these events are not currently running because of COVID-19.
Escape to the Chateau is available to watch every Sunday at 8pm on Channel 4.
