Emmerdale fans left heartbroken as moving episode is dedicated to director who died

Emmerdale fans were left heartbroken after Thursday night's moving episode included a tribute to a director of the show, Phillip Wood, who passed away in April this year.

The soap paid tribute to Phillip, who work at Emmerdale from 1999 to 2005, and directed 66 episodes, by flashing up a card dedicating the episode to him after an emotional scene between Cain Dingle and his mother, Faith.

The card read simply: "Dedicated to Philip Wood."

No cause of death or exact date of death has ever been given for Phillip, however, his former colleagues and workmates began to pay tribute to him on Twitter in April.

Actor Liam O'Brien, who played Ethan Blake on the popular soap wrote on Twitter: "Very sad to hear of the passing of Philip Wood a friend of mine from the @emmerdale days, a great character and wonderful director.

"First worked with him on a Brookside workshop in Belfast as a teen only to be directed by him in the farm nearly a decade later. RIP pal."

In the episode that was dedicated to Phillip, viewers were caught up in the emotion as Cain Dingle, played by Jeff Hordley and his sister Chas, played by Lucy Pargeter, came to terms with their mother Faith's (Sally Dexter) decision to stop her treatment for cancer.

Fans flocked to Twitter to praise the long-running soap for its handing of such a sensitive subject, with many praising the actors' performances.

One person tweeted: "@HordleyJeff I just wanted to say, Mr. Hordley, that I thought that you & Sally Dexter were utterly brilliant in last night's episode of Emmerdale. I must admit I did have a tear in my eye. Both you & @lucyparge have conveyed what it's like to know that your parent is dying."

Another person who had sadly lost their father to cancer, wrote: "Many congratulations on last night's ep. Lost my dad to cancer, it was hard! So watching this storyline is hard too. However, love you guys!!"

A third Twitter user wrote: "Well done #emmerdale on beautiful and moving ending last night."

Someone else praised the show for paying tribute to Phillip, writing: "We were incredibly touched by @fustes BEAUTIFUL script for Cain and Faith. Dedicated to Philip Wood, who was a director of Emmerdale. Absolutely stunning.

As well as working on Emmerdale between 1999 and 2005, over the years Phillip also worked on 22 episodes of Coronation Street, and he also worked at Channel 4's Brookside and River City.
