EastEnders star Jake Wood has revealed that the iconic Christmas showdown which saw Max Branning’s affair with Stacey Slater (Lacey Turner) exposed almost didn’t happen.
The actor — who portrays Max on the BBC One soap — spoke about the legendary moment in scenes which viewers can see in Monday’s episode of Secrets From The Square.
Jake told Stacey Dooley: ‘I remember that the Max and Stacey affair was originally going to be shorter.
‘I think it was originally going to be six months. And they changed it. They extended it, because I think they realised they wanted it to be the Christmas storyline.
‘Obviously, it really paid off.
The scene in question features the entire Branning clan discover that Max has been having an affair with Stacey — and they discover this via Lauren Branning’s home made DVD, featuring footage of Stacey’s wedding day to Bradley (Charlie Clements).
Jake continued: ‘All the family is there! Awful, isn’t it? Even now, it makes me feel a bit uncomfortable watching it.
‘I remember we shot it quite a few times, and the lovely thing about that was the director just let it play out.
‘He wasn’t telling anyone what shots he was getting. So, everyone was really in that moment.’
This particular EastEnders episode will re-air on Tuesday August 4 as the next iconic instalment.
One to watch: Monday August 3 at 8pm on BBC One.
