EastEnders star Danny Walters teases Keanu and Sharon's future as they receive sinister threats

EastEnders fans will see Keanu Taylor and Sharon Mitchell face a major new hurdle next week as someone starts threatening them over their secret affair.

A mystery individual has evidence of Keanu’s fling with Sharon and uses it to scare them with some anonymous text messages, even issuing the secret lovers with a major ultimatum. With the pressure rising, is it only a matter of time before their relationship is publicly exposed?

Digital Spy recently caught up with Danny Walters, who plays Keanu, to hear more about the twists and turns ahead in the story.

What was your first reaction when you found out about the Sharon and Keanu affair storyline?

“My first reaction was ‘here we go’, pretty much. When I read the script, I was very excited to be involved in such an amazing storyline. It’s nice to have a story where we can showcase these two characters, but also show them in a different light.

“It’s been very good and the story has grown a lot over the time we’ve been playing it. It’s expanded, so the complications and the repercussions are getting much bigger. So I was very excited to get a storyline like this.”

How did you find out about the storyline?

“I pretty much just read it in the script one day. Although a few weeks earlier, I was at an event and a journalist on the red carpet asked me what I thought about the possibility of Sharon and Keanu as a couple. I was like: ‘I’m confused. This is news to me!’

“Then weeks after we got the scripts – that’s when they started to delve into the Keanu and Sharon storyline.”

Do you think they make a good match?

“The way I’ve played it is that Keanu is madly in love with Sharon. So, since I play Keanu, I would say that they’re a good couple. But of course there’s a lot of heat and there’s a lot at stake for both of them. There’s a lot to lose and the repercussions could be huge.

“It’s a very tough one, because the more they try to grow their relationship, there’s more resistance. But I think they’re a great couple and I think they come across very well in the scripts and on camera.”

Do you think age-gap relationships can work out?

“That’s not my place to say. But for Keanu and Sharon, Keanu doesn’t care about the age. Keanu sees someone in front of him who’s very beautiful and pretty. He wears his heart on his sleeve and he is very smitten by her. He doesn’t care about anything else.

“Keanu doesn’t even care about Phil Mitchell right now and the possibility he could find out. Sometimes you can’t help who you fall in love with.”

You must be excited about the possibility of Phil finding out and filming a big showdown scene with Steve McFadden…

“Well, at the moment we don’t know what the longevity of the storyline is or where it’s going. But any chance I’ve had to work with Steve has been amazing. I’ve learned a lot from him and he’s a very talented actor. I’m very privileged to work with him.

“If there was a showdown, it would be a very good episode or two. It would be an honour to work with Steve on such a great story.”

What has Letitia Dean been like to work with?

“Tish is amazing. She is a lovely human being to work with, on and off screen, and on and off the set. She’s so professional and she knows exactly what she’s doing. She’s such a great energy to have around. So it’s very lucky for me to work with someone like Letitia Dean.”

Next week, someone knows about Sharon and Keanu’s affair and starts threatening them. Does Keanu have a theory on who it might be?

“There’s definitely a few speculations and theories that they have, but it could be anyone. It means the tension is much higher now. The pressure is on. It really does test them and we’ll soon find out who it will be. Although I can’t really say too much about that right now.”

We’ll see that Sharon decides to end things with Keanu when the stress becomes too much. How does that make Keanu feel?

“Keanu is confused a lot with their relationship and where it’s going. He is emotionally invested in Sharon, but at the same time, he’s getting mixed signals and mixed vibes from her all the time.

“Their relationship is being tested and there’s a lot of pressure on them, as well as a lot of questions that need to be answered.”

How does it feel to know there are some ‘Sheanu’ shippers out there on Twitter?

“It’s been nice. I think the support from fans means that we are telling a story that comes across as quite truthful. It’s nice to have the viewers gunning for Keanu and Sharon.”

Are you still hoping that Keanu’s villainous father will make an appearance one day?

“I’m very sure he will, but obviously I cannot say whether he will or won’t! But he’s a very interesting character, and there’s a lot to discover still. So hopefully he will make an appearance at one stage. That would be a very dark storyline, because he’s not a nice guy.”

How do you feel about Kate Oates taking over as producer after her strong work on Emmerdale and Corrie?

“I’m looking forward to working with Kate. John Yorke has done an amazing job, and Kate will carry on that trend, I’m very sure. We’re very lucky to have her, and I’m looking forward to doing the future storylines.”
