Caller Ian was furious with his local MP Therese Coffey after footage went viral of her singing at the Conservative Party conference and dancing on stage. The public has been split on the footage with some sympathising with the politicians who also needed to let their hair down whereas others thought the optics look bad when families are about to lose their Universal Credit uplift. But Ian was annoyed for another reason, telling Jeremy Vine on Channel 5 he has tried to meet with the MP to discuss his benefits but was constantly told she was too busy.

Caller Ian was furious at the clip and told Jeremy Vine: “We very rarely see her and if we do, I’m disabled, and I went to see her for an interview as I lost one of my benefits.

“And she told she hadn’t got time to see me.

“If she spent more time in her constituency looking after the problems that we have rather than dancing around like a demented idiot at the party conference…

“I know that have to have some time to relax, fair enough, but what is she going to do when the MPs have a pay rise, is she going to think about all the people who are in poverty?”

Mr Vine played devil’s advocate and suggested because she was in the Cabinet she may be extremely busy dealing with every case that pops up so may legitimately be unable to help Ian.

The Channel 5 presenter said it was “hard work” being a politician but Ian was having none of it.

He told the show he visited her constituency office and was told he could not meet her before seeing her cross the road 10 minutes later.

A spokesperson for Ms Coffey told Express.co.uk: “This is simply not true, I have never told a constituent that I don’t have time to meet them. In fact, I hold regular surgeries.”

Therese Coffey grilled by Reynolds over Universal Credit cut

Ms Coffey was filmed on stage on the last night of the Tory Party conference in Manchester and was seen jumping and dancing on stage.

The Pension Secretary was belting out “Time of my life” just as the reversal of the Universal Credit £20-a-week uplift was reversed.

Some critics believed it was a bad look that Conservative frontbenchers were celebrating when such a damaging policy is implemented.

Ms Coffey partied until the early hours and was seen with Education Minister Will Quince on stage.

Liberal Democrat MP Munira Wilson said: “I’ve no problem with politicians having fun. Hey, I love hitting the dancefloor.

“But just hours before this woman plunges thousands into poverty by slashing Universal Credit, how can Therese Coffey even live with herself, let alone belt out ‘Time of My Life’?”

Labour’s Nottingham East MP Nadia Whittome posted on Twitter: “Last night Work and Pensions Secretary Therese Coffey was partying at Tory Party conference, belting out ‘I’ve had the time of my life’.

“Do you know who isn’t having the time of their lives?

“The six million low-income families whose Universal Credit she’s just cut by £1,000.”
