Laura Neelan (played by Kel Allen) has caused havoc since arriving in Weatherfield. The mouthy mother was involved in Gary Windass (Mikey North) and Rick Neelan’s (Greg Wood) loan shark storylines, and when daughter Kelly (Millie Gibson) moved high schools, Laura stepped onto Coronation Street. spoke to the actress who plays the newcomer and she discussed the possibility of Laura being connected to the iconic Bet Lynch (Julie Goodyear).

Speaking about Laura’s personality traits, Kel said: “I think there’s definitely influences from the stronger female characters.

“I was raised by strong women, I was around strong women. I still am to this day.

“My friends, I feel like they’re all strong women in their own right.

“I remember when I was at my grandma’s as a child, her and her friends were the Ena Sharples, they were the Elsie Tanners, they were the ones gossiping and smoking their cigarettes.

“And so taking those characters and influences of the strong Corrie ones, I think there’s definitely parts of all of them in Laura, for sure,” the actress added.

“I’d love to think that Laura was related to Bet Lynch somewhere down the line because Laura’s always wearing her animal print, and she’s blonde.

“Being in the Rovers as well, which was an absolute tick off the bucket list for me – that was always one thing that I wanted to achieve,” Kel said.

Kel spoke about what it was like to go into the Rovers Return for the first time.

“I wasn’t like fazed by it,” she said.

“For me, if anything, it was just excitement and it felt like it’s where I belonged, in that pub.

“I’d like to see Laura behind that bar pulling pints!”

Well, perhaps it is Laura’s birthright to be serving the Weatherfield punters, as there is a possibility she could be connected to Bet.

Bet was once the landlady of the popular drinking establishment, and some fans may not know she had a child.

Martin Downes (Louis Selwyn) was born when Bet was just 16 years old and was given up for adoption.

He was only seen in the area twice and is presumably alive, albeit well into his 70s.

Little is known about Laura’s own lineage, therefore she could be Martin’s daughter.

If this is the case, there is no wonder Laura feels at home behind the bar, if that’s where her grandmother, Bet, stood.

It is thought Laura is sticking around for a while, as the truth about her husband Rick inches ever closer to being exposed.

With Gary trying to shut down her probes, maybe Laura will call in some family reinforcement?

Coronation Street airs Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 7.30pm and 8.30pm on ITV.
