Fans may be nearing the end of another glitzy season in the ballroom, but the remaining contenders have everything to play for as they head into the quarter finals this weekend. Helen Skelton, Will Mellor, Fleur East, Molly Rainford, Kym Marsh and Hamza Yassin made it through to next week’s musicals special, but in a recent interview, host Claudia Winkleman admitted she didn’t even know who one of the remaining celebrities was before the series began.

Claudia has admitted she was unaware of who Hamza Yassin was before he signed up to the BBC dance competition.

When asked if she had heard of all the contenders on this year’s line up, she confessed: “I’m embarrassed to say I didn’t know Hamza.”

The wildlife presenter and cameraman has been gaining serious traction throughout the competition, impressing both the judges and viewers voting at home each week.

Claudia went on to insist it “doesn’t matter” she was unaware of Hamza at first, revealing she’s now a huge fan of the wildlife presenter, who is a favourite to win.

Claudia, 50, who has co-presented Strictly alongside Tess Daly since 2010, added she doesn’t consider herself “famous” as the show is more about the judges and contestants.

She added to The Times: “I’m not being disingenuous. There are lots of shows that are about the host. Strictly isn’t.”

She went on to admit: “I could walk down the street – and we can put it to the test – with me in full sequins, humming the Strictly theme, and I could go, ‘The scores are in’, very loud from the top of Marble Arch. And nobody would look up.”

Hamza, who is also known to younger viewers as ‘Ranger Hamza’ from the Cbeebies show Let’s Go For A Walk has had an incredible run on the show so far, alongside professional dance partner Jowita Przystal.

The pair appeared together on Loose Women last week, where Hamza told the panel it’s been a struggle adjusting to his new found fame since appearing on the show.

He admitted: “You’re not meant to know who a wildlife cameraman or presenter is.”

So his new found popularity on social media has been quite overwhelming.

The 32-year-old started out as the underdog of the show, but has now solidified himself as a favourite to win.

He’s topped the leaderboard four times so far and has avoided the dance-off completely and his odds of winning are 3/1.

Loose Women panellist Jane Moore praised the presenter for his “humility”and his lack of celebrity status has made him “what the show is all about.”

Hamza expressed his gratitude towards his dance partner, telling the panellists Jowita “carried him through most of the week.”

The BBC have confirmed the Strictly final will take place on Saturday December 17, where the top three couples will battle it out for the coveted Glitterball Trophy.

The announcement comes after a shake up to the BBC’s festive scheduling, which saw the quarter finals move to Friday 2 December from 8pm due to clashes with the World Cup.

The results show will follow on Saturday 3 December from 5:40pm on BBC One.

Viewers will also be able to tune in the following weekend to watch the live semi-finals, which will now take place on Sunday 11 December on BBC One and iPlayer.
