Note: contains spoilers for all seven seasons of Chicago Fire.
When the seventh season of Chicago Fire premiered back in September, two months had passed since the events of the season six finale. The NBC action-drama – which follows the lives of the firefighters, rescue squad and paramedics of Firehouse 51 of the Chicago Fire Department – has never shied away from high-octane action, and showrunner Derek Haas has confirmed that there would be a lot more where that came from in the current season.
After saying goodbye to Gabby, would Casey be able to move on? And what would Gabby’s exit mean for Molly’s North, the bar she owns with Christopher and Otis?
Then there’s the brand new paramedic, Emily, who has been thrown into the mix, and the fallout from Boden losing his promotion to Carl – not to mention Severide and Kidd’s relationship, as well as the mystery surrounding her background.
Lots of questions that require lots of answers. But will the action continue for an eighth chapter, or will show creators Michael Brandt and Derek Haas wrap things up for good?
Here’s everything we know about season eight so far.
Chicago Fire season 8 cast: who’s coming back?
Viewers were extremely surprised when Gabby Dawson (Monica Raymund) returned at the end of the season seven premiere. The paramedic had taken a volunteer job in Puerto Rico helping the victims of Hurricane Maria, which eventually turned into a permanent position. That meant leaving behind her husband, despite Gabby suggesting that Casey join her. But he refused.
The couple had been talking via video chat earlier in the episode, but we certainly didn’t expect to see her standing before Casey in their living room, particularly after Raymund announced her departure from the series after her contract had expired. The couple are not currently divorced, but now we know that Gabby isn’t a part of the show anymore, it really does look like the end for “Dawsey”.
There’s always a chance that any member of the main cast could be cut from the fold, but we would expect the following to return: Captain Matthew Casey (Jesse Spencer), Lieutenant Kelly Severide (Taylor Kinney), Paramedic in Charge Sylvie Brett (Kara Killmer), Lieutenant Christopher Herrmann (David Eigenberg), Firefighter Brian “Otis” Zvonecek (Yuri Sardarov), Firefighter Joe Cruz (Joe Minoso), Firefighter Randy “Mouch” McHolland (Christian Stolte), Firefighter Stella Kidd (Miranda Rae Mayo), Chief Wallace Boden (Eamonn Walker), as well as new character Paramedic Emily Foster (Annie Ilonzeh).
However, Spencer and Kinney reportedly only signed one-year deals, according to Deadline, which would only carry them through season seven. Anything beyond that is unknown.
Chicago Fire season 8 episodes: how many can we expect?
Seasons 1-6 all feature more than 20 episodes, but after doing some digging, at the moment it looks like the seventh chapter will only air eight episodes.
The last episode of the series so far is called ‘The Solution to Everything’ and viewers will watch as Firehouse 51 is called in to tackle a highly dangerous structure fire that will put everyone in danger. It sounds ominous, and with significantly fewer episodes seemingly in store, season eight doesn’t sound particularly promising at the moment.
Chicago Fire season 8 air date: when will it be out?
History dictates that if we do get an eighth season, it’s likely to air in roughly a year’s time, which means that filming would have to start relatively soon.
But with no word yet on the future of the show, your guess is as good as ours.
