Beverley Callard age, husband, children, career and advocacy for mental health

Beverley Callard is best known for playing Rovers Return barmaid Liz McDonald on Coronation Street, but the actress has swapped the Cobbles for a Welsh castle and signed up for I’m A Celebrity…Get Me Out of Here this year.

The soap icon has certainly made a big first impression in camp, taking on two bushtucker trials with the team and getting to know her fellow campmates.

But if you’re not familiar with the TV legend, here’s a quick refresher…

How old is Beverley Callard and when did she first appear on Coronation Street?

Beverley, 63, was born in Morley, West Riding of Yorkshire on 28 March 1957.

After leaving school, the budding actress made her debut on television (and started what would become a long career in soaps) in 1983. Her first TV role saw her play Angie Richards in early episodes of Emmerdale.

After a few more, smaller, TV roles, Beverley won a part in Coronation Street playing a character called June Dewhurst in 1984. Although June only appeared in that one episode, it set the wheels in motion for what would become a career (and life) changing soap affiliation for Beverley.

In 1989 she was cast as Liz McDonald and the rest, as they say, is history.

Beverley became a stalwart of the soap, having first appeared on Corrie over 30 years ago. However, last year the actress announced that she had decided to leave Corrie in order to pursue other roles on stage and on screen.

Although she made a name for herself in Corrie, Beverley is also known for playing Flo Henshaw in Two Pints of Lager and a Packet of Crisps.

Who is Beverley Callard’s husband and do they have any kids?

Beverley Callard’s husband is called Jon McEwan and the couple have been married for 10 years now, having tied the knot back in October 2010.

Jon is Beverley’s fourth husband. She was first married in 1974 to a man named Paul Atkinson, who is the father to her actress daughter, Rebecca Callard.

The couple divorced in 1977 and Beverley went on to marry David Snowden, a teacher, in 1980. After eight years or marriage the couple separated amicably in 1988.

Beverley’s third husband was a man named Steve Callard, who is the father of her son, Joshua. Steve and Beverley were married between 1989 and 2001.

Beverley Callard’s charity work and advocacy for mental health support

In 2010 Beverley teamed up with mental health charity Mind to raise awareness about mental health issues and depression.

The actress had to take a five month break from filming Corrie in 2009 after suffering a nervous breakdown, for which she received treatment in the Priory Clinic.

On announcing that she had become an ambassador for Mind the soap icon said: ‘I have been speaking to the mental health charity Mind about lending my support to the work they do. I feel it is really important to try and help lift the stigma that makes life so difficult for the one in four people who experience mental health problems.

‘Being able to recover out of the media spotlight has hugely helped me and meant that I could return to work last year whilst still receiving treatment as an outpatient.’

At the time a spokeswoman for Coronation Street said: ‘Everyone at ITV has been behind Beverley through this very difficult time. We are extremely proud of the huge progress she has made and delighted that she is back on screen at the centre of the show and we continue to support her.’

Beverley has continued to advocate for mental health issues over the last decade, championing causes and raising money for services to support those who need help.

Speaking on Loose Women last year, Beverley said: ‘The only way to get better is to have professional help and it’s different for each person. Although professional help is not available to everyone and it’s really difficult to get and so we have to keep that fight going.’
