Visitors to Emmerdale will be needing to pay extra attention when crossing the road because the village is about to double its quota of reckless drivers. With Jamie Tate currently embroiled in an attempt to cover up his own hit-and-run crime, we’re now about to get a reappearance from someone else who should have been keeping a closer eye on their speedometer: Kirin Kotecha.
He’s currently a fugitive from the law, but has gone to extremes to evade capture, having acquired a brand-new face since he fled in 2016. But there’s more to his return than the mere fact that he’s now being played by Rish Shah rather than Adam Fielding. For those who’d like a reminder (as well as a sneak preview) of all things Kirin, read on…
So, who is Kirin Kotecha?
Kirin and his legal eagle dad Rakesh arrived on screen in 2014 and were soon bringing plenty of drama along with them. While Rakesh established himself as the husband of Priya Sharma and a business rival of her brother Jai, his teen son Kirin quickly became involved in an age-gap romance with local vet Vanessa Woodfield.
What were his major storylines?
Kirin’s on-off relationship with Vanessa provided plenty of cliffhangers. First, there was her breast cancer scare (about which Kirin wasn’t exactly supportive). Then there was the bombshell news of Vanessa’s pregnancy – and the possibility of Adam rather than Kirin being the father of the baby. Meddling Rakesh altering the DNA results didn’t help matters either, his actions eventually resulting in Kirin ending his and Vanessa’s relationship.
Kirin’s next plotline saw him start up a cordial-making business with Belle, with whom he also became romantically involved. But it wasn’t long before the truth about baby Johnny’s paternity was revealed, with Kirin disowning his dad after discovering all about his subterfuge. However, parenthood proved overwhelming for Kirin and he was soon seeking solace in the bottle.
So, how did Kirin leave?
A binge-drinking session resulted in him hitting teaching assistant Tess Harris with his car and leaving the scene of his crime. Fearing that the police would catch up with him, Kirin then fled the village, leaving Rakesh a note that read: ‘Sorry I’m not the man you want me to be.’ Kirin ended up in South America, but is now set to resurface as part of a current Emmerdale plotline that has seen Vanessa’s partner Charity plan to adopt Johnny, only to find out that she needs Kirin’s consent to do so…
What has actor Adam Fielding done since leaving Emmerdale?
Since exiting the ITV soap, the 27-year-old has stacked up the screen credits with roles in BBC crime thriller In the Dark, the pilot episode of Superman prequel series Krypton and C4 school-set drama Ackley Bridge. Upcoming projects include sci-fi actioner Outside the Wire.
Who is playing Kirin now?
Actor Rish Shah has taken on the role for this week’s guest stint. Prior to this appearance on Emmerdale, the actor appeared in Russell T Davies’s dystopian drama Years and Years, as well as Doctors and Casualty. He’s set to be seen next in the third instalment of the To All the Boys film series, which is entitled Always and Forever, Lara Jean.
So, what happens when Kirin turns up this week?
Well, it’s fair to say that Kirin won’t be making things easy for himself when he arrives back in the village. He’ll first be seen approaching Priya and making demands, both for cash and the chance to see Johnny. When Priya refuses to hand over any money and also reveals that Charity is adopting the youngster, Kirin spies an opportunity to extort the funds from her instead.
Pretty soon, Kirin has turned up at Jacobs Fold to tell Charity that he’ll make it impossible for her to adopt Johnny unless she gives him a large sum. What lengths will Charity go to in order to lay her hands on enough money to pay Kirin off?
