Westlife flying without wings into Wembley stadium for once-in-a-lifetime performance

Westlife are flying without wings… into Wembley Stadium.

The quartet became the first band to pose on the famous stadium’s roof to announce a huge gig there on August 22 next year.

Before then I can reveal the boys will release a new Ed Sheeran-penned song called My Blood as their next single.

Shane Filan told me: “It’s a huge statement but I think My Blood has the same power as Flying Without Wings did in 1999; it’s just one of those songs that will connect.” Nicky Byrne agreed: “It is safe to say it is Ed Sheeran and (songwriting partner) Steve Mac at their best!”

The new song has an important message too and hints that Ed might be ready to start a family.

Nicky explained: “It’s about growing up, it’s a love song.

“You can see Ed is talking about being a parent and watching your child grow up and giving them the best tools to deal with life like bullying.”

Bullying is big news this week, with Little Mix’s Jesy Nelson revealing that social-media abuse drove her to attempt suicide in her documentary Odd One Out.

Westlife have endured their own fair share, particularly Markus Feehily, who said: “For some reason trolls have gravitated towards me more than the boys, and it is tough.”

But they are most concerned about their own children. Nicky told me: “It’s absolutely terrifying as fathers. The bullying needs to change, it’s not policed and kids are committing suicide everyday, girls are slagged off about their weight or whatever and going home and killing themselves. Something needs to happen.”
