On July 23, 2020, Taylor Swift shocked her fans by announcing her eighth studio album folklore. Swift’s latest collection of songs comes less than a year after her release of Lover.
Any time Swift releases new music, fans try to unpack hidden meanings in her lyrics and music videos. Swift has become known for hiding Easter Eggs throughout her work, and folklore was no different.
Here are some of the top theories fans came up with regarding the music on folklore.
Some fans believe Taylor Swift and Joe Alwyn broke up
Swift has been dating Joe Alwyn for some time. After having very public relationships in the past, Swift has kept a lot of the details of her relationship with Alwyn private.
Despite how little is known about Swift’s relationship with the actor, some fans think the sad songs on folklore imply the two are no longer a couple.
While this theory is plausible, other Swift fans believe the sad songs on the album pertain to the characters in the fictional “teenage love triangle” Swift created. The night the album was released, she talked on YouTube about how “Betty,” “Cardigan,” and “August” told a story.
Is William Bowery Joe Alwyn?
Swift collaborated with artists like Bon Iver and Jack Antonoff to create folklore. Eagle-eyed fans noticed another name on the album credits — William Bowery. The name is credited on “Betty” and “Exile.”
Many fans have started to theorize who the mysterious William Bowery is. Some assume it’s a pseudonym for Alwyn.
The actor’s great-grandfather was a composer named William Alwyn. Many Swifties believe the name William Bowery could be Alwyn’s pseudonym, combining his grandfather’s first name with the location of his and Swift’s first date — the Bowery Hotel in New York.
Fans on TikTok think Taylor and Joe are getting married — or already married
When fans receive the physical copy of folklore, they’ll hear the bonus track Swift included called “The Lakes.” There has been a lot of speculation surrounding this song, as many fans believe it will contain a big announcement.
As one fan on TikTok pointed out, the song could be Swift’s way of announcing her engagement or marriage to Alwyn.
IT WAS RIGHT IN FRONT OF US. #folklore
“I think Taylor’s getting married to Joe or maybe she’s already married and she’s going to announce it [August 7],” they said.
Some fans think “The Lakes” will reveal that Taylor Swift is pregnant
The same TikTok user also believes “The Lakes” could contain an even bigger announcement.
“Maybe she’s pregnant…” they added at the end of the TikTok.
Other Swifties have found possible hints at Swift’s pregnancy in songs like “Peace.” The lyric “Give you my wild, give you a child” led many fans to think this song was Swift speaking to Alwyn.
Swift’s engagement, nor her marriage or her pregnancy have been confirmed.
Like Swift, fans have let their imagination “run wild” theorizing what every detail of folklore could mean.
When Swift announced the album on Instagram, she did say she “poured all of [her] whims, dreams, fears, and musings into” the album.
It could be that Swift truly did create the album to tell a fictional story. Or it could be her way of sharing some huge news with her fans.
