Simon Cowell gaining weight while recovering from intensive surgery, says pal

Simon Cowell is gaining weight to help facilitate his post-op recovery, his pal Sinitta has claimed.

The 61-year-old music mogul previously floored fans with his weight loss, having shed 60 pounds after taking on a serious lifestyle revamp.

However, after falling off an electric bicycle in early August, the BGT star was forced to undergo intensive surgery to fix his broken back.

The recovery means Simon will have to gain back some of the weight he has lost by adding protein into his diet, former X Factor star Sinitta revealed.

The 52-year-old singer confessed she has stayed in touch with Simon over the phone, as he camps out in LA with girlfriend Lauren Silverman and his son Eric, six.

Speaking about his weight gain, Sinitta said: "I spoke to him last week and he sounded so much better.

"He wasn't dazed, sedated or weak. He was really bright, happy and clear. He's gained a bit of weight and is looking healthier. He said he had to start eating protein, calcium and break his vegan diet to rebuild his strength."

The songstress continued: "That's the wisest thing. He was bloated and stressed, then he was too thin and exhausted.

"Now he is fit and relaxed. He's found his sweet spot.

"He sounds relieved and exhilarated. The sea air is so healing and rejuvenating."

Simon was forced to step down from his role as head judge on Britain's Got Talent this autumn, leaving Amanda Holden in his place.

His weight loss had left BGT fans stunned at the beginning of the year during the audition stages of the competition, as he debuted his slimmed-down physique on the ITV show.

Previously, Simon admitted to loving carb-heavy foods such as pizza and spaghetti, but a trip to the hospital in 2017 encouraged him to turn his life around.

When docs discovered he had low blood pressure, he went to see a specialist about his diet who encouraged him to eat vegan and to ditch meat.

Speaking to Extra about his weight loss in May, he said: "I think I have dropped, since I started this diet a year ago, 60 pounds."

Though he continues to consume fish, Simon cut out dairy completely, adding: "It was way easier than you may think.

"Like, I used to have yoghurt in the morning and I changed it to almond-milk yoghurts. I have almond milk in my tea."
