Queen’s ‘crush’ Tomasz Schafernaker – rude on-air gaffe to ’70s’ transformation

It was recently reported that Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II, had a bit of a soft spot for BBC weather presenter Tomasz Schafernaker.

He's best known for that awkward clip of him flipping the finger at his BBC co-stars not realising he was live on-air, but he's also got a hidden talent he rarely shows off on television.

Tomas was voted Britain's favourite weatherperson a few years ago, and it's clear to see why – but he was reportedly also a favourite in the royal household.

A source recently claimed that the late monarch would always watch the weather when Tomasz presented it and she had taken a bit of a fancy to him.

But what else has Tomas done in life?

As well as becoming one of the BBC's weather presenters, Tomasz has delighted viewers with a guest appearances on Would I Lie To You and Celebrity Masterchef.

That's not all, as he has also had a number of famous on-air moments and wowed fans with his hidden talent.

Bond with BBC co-stars and on-air gaffe

Weather presenter Tomasz, 43, was born in Gdansk, Poland and embarked on a degree in meteorology at the University of Reading.

After joining the BBC, he became a familiar face during its main news programme and was voted Britain's favourite weatherperson in 2017.

He has also regularly shared photographs with his fellow co-stars including Reeta Chakrabarti and former news presenter Simon McCoy from the set on social media too.

Tomasz and former BBC news presenter Simon McCoy often delighted viewers with their on-screen chatter.

However, a moment between the two went viral in 2010, after Tomasz jokingly raised his middle finger to the presenter before a weather segment.

Simon had joked with viewers that the weather bulletin would be "100% accurate", before Tomasz cheekily raised his middle finger off-camera at the presenter.

He did not realise that the camera had panned to him however, and Tomasz quickly had to grab his chin before the camera moved away from him again.

Simon then told viewers: "Every now and again there's always a mistake and that was it."

Tomasz later apologised for any offence caused to viewers.

More than a decade later, the clip continues to do the rounds on social media.

Busted by new BBC set

Many BBC news viewers will have noticed that there is a new set in the studio.

One of the biggest changes is the full length view of the weather presenters – but Tomasz had admitted that he has now been "busted" by the set.

The star wears a number of stylish suits while presenting the weather.

However, he has been keeping his footwear off-camera for years, as he regularly wears trainers on set, rather than formal shoes.

Tomasz took to Twitter to admit that he had been "busted" by the new set, and that his stylish footwear may not appeal to some viewers.

He tweeted: "I really love my super bright white sneakers… so comfy and especially chosen for the big set.

"There’ll be a few ‘bores’ who moan and groan about them."

One viewer replied, saying that wearing trainers "only became an issue since the new set", adding: "They've [the presenters] all been wearing trainers for years, but nobody knew about it."

Tomasz retweeted the comment with a smiling face and a thumbs up, with the caption: "Busted."

'70s Porn star look'

It is not the first time fans have pointed out Tomasz's on air looks, as his hair caused quite a stir back in 2020.

As with all of us during the lockdown, no one could get a haircut, and Tomasz rocked his new long locks on air – much to the delight of fans.

However, others were not sure of the look, with some fans comparing his hair to that of a "70s porn star."

When the barbers opened, Tomasz announced that he was keeping his long hair, and continued to rock his new look on his weather broadcasts.

When asked if he was keeping his long hair after the barbers reopened, the star said: "Keeping – it’ll need a little styling but that’s it," before adding: "My choice."

However in 2021, Tomasz shared a snap of him with shorter hair, captioning the post: "I fancied another change… the 70s are gone."

Whatever way he styles his hair though, fans can't seem to get enough of his stylish looks, with one tweeting: "How you choose to appear is obviously your personal choice. I liked the longer hair. But I like the new look too. I guess you just look good whichever way you choose."

"You always look great Tomasz but I'm glad you’ve had a change because you wanted to and not because of pressure from other people. You have to be happy in your own skin and not how you are viewed by others. Have a lovely day x," commented another.

Queen's "crush"

It was recently revealed that Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II, had a "secret crush" on Tomasz and loved to watch his weather forecasts.

The late monarch – who died on September 8 – was said to have tuned in to his broadcasts whenever he appeared on BBC News.

A source told The Daily Mail that it was almost "like a bit of a crush".

"She always wanted to watch the forecasts when he was on," the source claimed.

"She was amused hearing the cadences when his name was read out but she loved watching him, too."

Fans also agreed with The Queen's tastes, with one saying: "What!!! That's amazing… imagine being the Queen's favourite… Good for you Tomasz."

"Very well deserved Tomasz! You cheer so many of us up and the Queen obviously has good judgement!" added a second on Twitter.

Hidden talent

Tomasz may be a talented meteorologist, but he is also a very gifted artist.

The star regularly shares glimpses of his art work on his Instagram page, which has included portraits of Sir David Attenborough and Hollywood stars Judi Dench and Will Smith.

If that wasn't all, he also put his skills to the test on Sky Arts programme Celebrity Portrait Artist Of The Year in 2018.

Prior to his appearance, the star tweeted: "Started portraits a little over a year and never thought in a million years I’d be brave enough to enter anything like this."

Competing against celebrities including Maureen Lipman, Joe Lycett, Phil Jupitus and Josie Long, Tomasz lost out to Vic Reeves (real name Jim Moir) and paid tribute to the star on Twitter.

Tomasz said: "Thanks for all the lovely comments re tonight’s #CelebrityPAOTY on @SkyArts. Well done to Jim @JamesMoir10! My water colour of model @KanyaKing was quite a challenge under time pressure!"

Romance

Away from the limelight, Tomasz has become somewhat of a heartthrob to viewers and even appeared on the front of Attitude Active Magazine in just a pair of boxer shorts.

However, he tends to keep his personal life private and it is not known if the star is in a relationship.

Tomasz also revealed to The Guardian in 2017 that he was not in a relationship, saying: "I'm single. I'm probably difficult to date, because I'm stubborn, with a million and one interests, and work unsociable hours.

"You know what – all that's an excuse. I'm quite happy being by myself."
