Sir Paul McCartney’s first wife Linda was one who joined him in a huge number of endeavours. She was a member of the band Wings, and also joined him in his vegetarianism. Beatles fans were united against John Lennon’s partner, Yoko Ono – but did Linda get the same treatment?
Sir Paul met Linda Eastman, a music photographer, in 1967 at a Georgie Fame concert, where her “pushiness” worked a treat.
In Harry’s book, Linda was quoted as saying: “I was quite shameless really. I was with somebody else… and I saw Paul at the other side of the room.
“He looked so beautiful that I made up my mind I would have to pick him up.”
The pair were married in 1969, but the wedding was almost derailed according to Sir Paul.
He told Barry Miles in Paul McCartney: Many Years From Now: “We were crazy. We had a big argument the night before we got married and it was nearly called off.
“We were very up and down, quite funky compared to the eventual image of ’25 years of married bliss! Aren’t they lucky for people in showbiz?’ But we are.
“You get this picture of us swanning along in a little rowboat managing to avoid the white water, but we were right in the middle of that white water, man, so it’s even more miraculous that we made it. But we did.”
Initially, fans were not keen on Linda, and many fans were seen weeping outside as Linda and Sir Paul tied the knot.
- John Lennon wife: How did John Lennon meet Yoko Ono?
The Guardian reported at the time: “Fans flung themselves in front of the car. One of them was guided into the building by the police in a dazed state.
“One arms-linked group fell down in the mud, got up again and wandered backwards and forwards across the Marylebone Road, chased by the police and television cameramen saying, ‘Cry into this microphone.'”
Of course, the Beatles broke up a year later, and along with Yoko, Linda was believed to be a reason behind it.
Linda seemed not to have been phased by that, however, and Yoko certainly took far more of the attention.
- John Lennon will: Why did Beatles star ‘cut son Julian out of will’?
She told Playboy n 1984: “When I married Paul, I knew I’d never had these problems.
“But God knows, people got on my back, and for things I wasn’t really doing.
“But I’m just not the type who’ll get up and explain herself. It’ll just go down that I’m that woman.”
Despite this, the couple were very happy and had three children together.
Linda’s daughter from a previous relationship, Heather, was adopted by Sir Paul, and together the couple had Mary, Stella and James.
Heather McCartney is a potter, while Stella McCartney is a world-renowned fashion designer.
Mary McCartney is a photographer, following in her mother’s footsteps, while their son James McCartney has followed in his father’s footsteps and is a musician.
Linda died of breast cancer in 1998, at age 56, which devastated the family.
