Janet Jackson and Justin Timberlake's 'Nipplegate' controversy will be the focus of a new documentary which will look at where both of the pop stars are now and the effects of that day,

The 'Nipplegate' fiasco – which saw Justin expose Janet's breast to the Super Bowl audience in 2004 – will never be forgotten despite happening 18 years ago.

The headline-making wardrobe malfunction took place during the halftime show at the Super Bowl XXXVIII in Houston, Texas.

The new documentary will be titled Malfunction: The Dressing Down of Janet Jackson and will tell the tale of how the careers of the two pop stars went in far different directions.

Former Senior VP of MTV Salli Frattini explained how Janet was initially supposed to wear a tear-away skirt, with a full jumpsuit underneath, that Timberlake would pull off when he sang the Rock Your Body lyrics: "I'm gonna have you naked by the end of this song."

After this was denied by organisers for being too un-family friendly, it was alleged that Jackson's stylist Wayne Scot Lukas decided to buy new fabric and the starburst nipple shield.

She claimed a request was made for Justin to speak with Janet and her stylist in her dressing room before going on stage, resulting in "a small conversation that lasted minutes" just before showtime.

Salli said: "We had no knowledge at all of what might have been happening with Janet and her team" she explained as private conversations between the artists allegedly happened backstage before the gig.

"And then, of course, we come to the close and it's the final few seconds of the song and that's just when everything went wrong.

"We all stood there in shock. Of course one of the first things we tried to do was talk to Janet. Janet fled. We couldn't get her on the phone, we couldn't get the manager on the phone."

Director McCarthy-Miller also recalled how Michael Jackson's sister was spotted crying when her stage manager talked to her after the show.

The Sexy Back star's career only skyrocketed from there, while Janet's career took an immense blow, so much that people speculated her music was "blacklisted" from radio and MTV.

Her brother Tito Jackson spoke in the doc and said: "I don't know if 'blacklist' is the word that they tried to do to my sister, but it sure seemed liked they were trying to diminish her career and her ability."
