Tom Jones first met Elvis Presley at Paramount Pictures in 1965 and the two singers stayed great friends all the way up to The King’s death. From 1967, Tom began performing in Las Vegas a year before Elvis’ Comeback Special. Following a string of poor movies and his 1968 TV show’s success, The King was ready for a big return to live music and looked to Tom to regain his confidence.
In the late 1960s, it was the bands like The Beatles that seemed all the rage, rather than the hunky solo singers.
But Tom Jones was doing his act in Las Vegas successfully, so Elvis Presley went to watch his shows often, telling him after one, “You really lit a fire in me.”
Then in 1969, The King returned to Sin City with a residency of his own at the newly opened International Hotel, where he would perform in regular month-long stints for the rest of his life.
During the 1970s, Elvis would overlap with Tom in Las Vegas and the Welsh star has described how The King and his girlfriend Linda Thompson would keep watching his concerts.
Speaking on The Graham Norton Show earlier this year, Sir Tom said: “When we played Vegas together, when he’d finish his shows and I’d still be there, he’d come to my shows.
“He’d always be there. Sometimes he’d walk on the stage. The strangest thing is I’d be in the middle of a song and then suddenly everyone would go ‘ahhh’, and I’d be thinking, ‘what’s happened?!’”
Now as Sir Tom has released his UK no 1 new album Surrounded By Time, Linda has sent him congratulations by sharing a photo of Elvis enjoying one of his Las Vegas shows.
Posted on her Instagram story, the 70-year-old former Miss Tennessee can be seen sitting in the audience with Elvis standing up with his hands in the air.
Linda wrote: “Congratulations to @realsirtomjones on his record! This photo is from Tom’s show in Vegas many years ago.”
The snap was taken in the early 1970s and is believed to be on one of the occasions of Elvis introducing the Welsh star to the audience.
Sir Tom also told Graham Norton of a time when The King interrupted his shower backstage at a show.
The 80-year-old said: “One night, I’ve come off stage and Elvis is in the dressing room.”

Elvis said: “Tom, I’ve got a song for you.” To which the sweating Welsh singer replied: “Ok great, but I gotta get in the shower.”
The 80-year-old continued: “So I’m in the shower, and the water’s coming down and then I hear [Elvis singing].
“I was thinking, ‘I’m going bloody mad here!’ because I can hear Elvis Presley singing in the shower! Then I opened my eyes and he’s leaning over the door!”
While in August 1974, The King praised Tom when he came to see one of his shows in Las Vegas.
Elvis said how there was someone in the audience he’d like everyone to meet and even called Tom his favourite singer.
The King said: “He’s one of the greatest performers I’ve ever seen, and the greatest voice, Tom Jones. There he is. He’s too much.
“Tom, you open at Caesars palace tomorrow night, right? Folks, if you get the chance, go over and see him.
“He’s really something. He always comes to see my show here and I go to see his. It’s a mutual respect.’”
