Billie Eilish has made our lockdown by releasing a new song, My Future. The song has come as fans are despairing at being kept indoors, and is far more upbeat and fun than some of Eilish’s previous output. But fans have been trying to work out what the song might mean and why now is the moment to release it.
Billie Eilish has not left this to chance, and has explained pretty openly what the song is about.
In the email to fans, she said: “When we wrote this song, it was exactly where my head was at – hopeful, excited and a craaaazy amount of self reflection and self growth.
“But recently it has also taken on a lot of new meaning in the context of what’s happening in the world now… the future feels uncertain and crazy right now.
“But I think we need to be ready to put the work in, and if we do that, we should be hopeful and excited for our future.

“I have to keep reminding myself that the future is ours, and I know we want to do everything we can to make it better for everyone in the world. and for the world itself…
“It’s up to us to change things now. not only for us but for future generations. stay hopeful.”
This is a personal message for Billie, as are most of her songs, and here she is calling on young people to be willing to make their future brighter than our current circumstances.
Her previous songs are often taken from snippets of her journal, as she has shared in interviews.
In an interview with Rolling Stone, she showed off this notebook, saying: “For a while I wrote down literally everything I was thinking or feeling in this book.
“I actually haven’t done anything in this book for a while — because I’ve been hiding all my emotions?”
Referring to one frightening image in the book, she said: “This is literally how I got the whole concept for the album [her first album]. It’s kind of what I imagine I look like in my head.”
Billie, for the most part, writes her own music, but she does not do it completely alone.

While many singers and performers write their music with famous producers, like Michael Jackson pairing up with Quincy Jones, Eilish keeps her songwriting in the family.
Speaking to Clash magazine, Eilish explained how she and her family are “really musical.”
She said: “We’ve always been a really musical family, in sort of a gross way.
“You know, like some car commercials or music commercials – no, that’s not a thing – car commercials, where it’s a whole family in a car and somebody starts tapping on the window?
“Then somebody else is like boom and everybody makes the beat, then somebody starts singing, and somebody starts singing harmonies.
“That sounds really unrealistic but we’re like that, bro, we’ve always been like that.”
While her entire family are musical, there is one person with whom Eilish collaborates to write her songs: her brother, Finneas.
Finneas is a singer/songwriter in his own right, but much of his success has come from pairing up with Eilish.
Speaking about their writing relationship, Eilish said: “He is really like my partner in making music. We give and take so well.
“There’s so much time wasted, working with people you don’t know, where if you don’t like something, you’re like: ‘You could, maybe, I don’t know, maybe try something where it’s a little different.’
“Whereas, with Finneas it’s just like, ‘No, that sucks, let’s move on.’ We just know each other so we can do that.”
