The 2018 American Music Awards wrapped up with a tribute to Aretha Franklin. Introduced by host Tracee Ellis Ross, an all-star line up of Gladys Knight, Ledisi, Donnie McClurkin, CeCe Winans and Mary Mary gathered onstage at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles on October 9 to honor the late Queen of Soul.
Following a video looking back at Franklin’s history at the award-giving show, Knight opened the show-closing set with a tender version of “Amazing Grace” before McClurkin belted out “Climb Higher Mountains”. The latter was used as the recessional song at Franklin’s funeral.
Winans then took the stage to deliver a rousing rendition of “Mary Don’t You Weep”. Her performance was followed by Ledisi, who invited the crowd to dance along to “How I Got Over”. Joined by a choir, Mary Mary closed the set with their gospel rendition of “Old Landmark”.
