Widow's Point: First look at lighthouse indie horror thriller

Widow’s Point

As Halloween draws near, who wouldn’t want to spend the weekend in an old lighthouse rumored to be inhabited by restless spirits? Let’s take a first look into the world of Widow’s Point, an indie horror film directed by Gregory Lamberson, opening in 2019.

Widow’s Point

The film is based on the novella by Richard and Billy Chizmar, about a ghost-story writer who decides to promote his latest book by spending the weekend wired with cameras and recording gear inside an abandoned lighthouse with a sinister history. Richard, who co-authored Gwendy’s Button Box last year with Stephen King, is our guide through the photos.

The attention-seeking author, Thomas Livingston, is played by Craig Sheffer (A River Runs Through It.) “That’s in the lighthouse, and he’s going through all the clutter. That doll is something that was left behind,” says Chizmar.

Kaelin Lamberson plays Delaney Collins, from the 1933 timeline. “There was a family that was slaughtered in the lighthouse,” Chizmar says. “The lighthouse keeper, his wife, his son, and his daughter. That doll belonged to his daughter, and she was sensitive to what was going on inside there.”

A behind-the-scenes shot with her costar: Willow Xylia Anwar plays a spirit named Rebecca Birch, who committed suicide at Widow’s Point in 1836 after her sailor husband died at sea. “Rebecca is the first of many ghosts who now haunt the lighthouse, appearing in different time periods througout the film,” Chizmar says. (She’s also Sheffer’s real-life daughter with actress Gabriel Anwar.)

Rebecca Birch is seen here in a more gruesome than etheral form, agonizing at the moment of her savage death. Or maybe this is a time after. “She’s pretty bloody, but also decayed,” Chizmar says.

The lighthouse keeper’s daughter is “the one the other spirits responded to, but she also met a violent ending,” Chizmar says. And part of her still resides at the abandoned structure.

The actual lighthouse where Widow’s Point shot is Dunkirk Lighthouse in western New York, guiding ships away from the coastline in Lake Erie. “It just needed to be an old-fashioned stone lighthouse with a catwalk, and this one is still operational,” Chizmar says.

Widow’s Point just finished shooting and doesn’t yet have a distributor, but Chizmar said he expects the film to turn up on the festival circuit before settling on a release date.

Livingston enlists the aid of a publicist (KateLynn E. Newberry) and a documentary filmmaker (Dominic Luongo) to help broadcast his sleepover publicity stunt, but he is the only one who goes inside the lighthouse. “He’s a showman, and some people would call him a charlatan,” Chizmar says.
