Scarlett Johansson Says Her Favorite Line In the MCU Was In 'Iron Man 2'

The cast of Avengers: Endgame has begun their press tour in the weeks leading up to the film’s release. While they can’t share any details about the movie itself, they’ve been using the time to reflect on the past and talk a little about the journey of the Marvel Cinematic Universe to date, as well as reveal a few other non-spoiler bits of information. Here’s what Scarlett Johansson (Natasha Romanoff / Black Widow), Paul Rudd (Scott Lang / Ant-Man), Chris Hemsworth (Thor), and Robert Downey Jr. (Tony Stark / Iron Man) revealed on Jimmy Kimmel Live.

It really is the end for some characters

When Kimmel posed that this could be the last time that the Avengers come on his show, Downey Jr. replied, “Well, the future’s very uncertain.” But Johansson corrected him, saying, “Don’t lie to him, we’re never coming back.” Though it was treated as a joke, and there’s no way to know for sure if the Avengers will do another movie together, it sounds as though Johansson is confirming what we’ve known all along — there are real stakes here, and not all of the characters will make it through Endgame.

The movie’s runtime has sparked a joke amongst the cast

Because Endgame will be 3 hours and 2 minutes long (at the last report), many have brought up how this may affect the viewing audience. Some wondered if there would be a built-in intermission, but so far, that doesn’t seem likely.

When Kimmel asked about when viewers should plan to use the bathroom during the film, Johansson brought up something that’s been mentioned in several interviews thus far. “Mark (Ruffalo, Bruce Banner / the Hulk) said you should wear a diaper,” she chuckled. “Then you don’t have to get up. But you’re also sitting in your own urine, so…” said Johansson.

Johansson was partially responsible for a big commemorative gesture

Kimmel brought up something else interesting: Five of the six “original” Avengers (Johansson, Downey Jr., Ruffalo, Hemsworth, Jeremy Renner (Clint Barton / Hawkeye), and Chris Evans (Steve Rogers / Captain America) have matching tattoos. Johansson said that she and Evans came up with the idea together. However, one of the actors mentioned above didn’t get it.

“Mark does not have it,” she told Kimmel. “I guess he said yesterday that he’s afraid of needles,” she continued. “But he didn’t say that before. It seemed like he was really judgmental,” Johansson said of Ruffalo’s thoughts on the subject.

This was her favorite line from the MCU

Johansson began playing Black Widow way back in Iron Man 2. When asked about a favorite line from the franchise, she said, “When we were doing reshoots for Iron Man 2, I guess my character was kind of overseeing the action on the computer screen. And I’m just really bad at techie jargon,” she laughed.

The actress continued, “I had a line that went… ‘Bogies converging on the oracle pavilion. Lock and load, the fight’s coming to you.’” Johansson delivered the line straight to the camera to cheers. “I think it got cut — I think actually, [director] Jon Favreau is saying the line and I’m just mouthing the words.” As it turns out, she was correct the first time: In the final product, the line is simplified, with her character saying, “You got incoming, Tony. Looks like the fight’s coming to you.”
