Marvel star says next Captain America could be African American or a woman

Chris Evans might be stepping down from his iconic role as Captain America, but the star-spangled shield looks to be far from heading into storage.

Avengers: Infinity War star Chris Evans left Marvel fans reeling earlier this month when he said goodbye to his Marvel character in a tweet confirming he’d wrapped on Avengers 4, and while he’s since been leaving the question of his future in the MCU open to debate, we’ve still been left wondering who could replace the superhero.

And now MCU actor Frank Grillo, who appeared as Captain America’s terrorist enemy Crossbones in the Captain America films, has suggested that the studio is looking for a diverse lead to pick up the shield.

“There have been rumours that Captain America could be African American. It could be a woman. You know? So they’re looking,” Frank told Larry King in a recent interview.

During the chat, Grillo also didn’t seem very surprised that Evans might be leaving the role for good, adding: “That ran its course, those guys are all getting a bit old.”

Well, with that news, it looks like Marvel are looking to continue their commitment to tell more diverse stories and produce more superhero films in the vain of Black Panther and the upcoming Captain Marvel.

As for Evans himself, his future in the MCU isn’t looking too promising, having previously told Entertainment Tonight that he’ll look back on his years as Steve Rogers with “wonderful memories”.

“Well, you know, my contract is over, so that’s as far as I know,” he said. “[I’ll miss] everything [about Captain America]. I mean, it’s not just the character, it’s the people – the experience, such good movies, such wonderful memories. I’ll miss a lot.”

Then again, after his goodbye tweet earlier this month Evans did seem to suggest that he’s not going anywhere just yet, telling crowds at ACE Comic Con: “I should clarify that regardless of how Avengers 4 ends, I would have tweeted the exact same thing.

“That last day of filming was a very emotional day and it was the culmination of almost 10 years of filming and 22 movies, this unbelievable tapestry.

“You feel a lot more emotions than I think even I thought I’d feel. And I felt it was appropriate to share the gratitude. I know it had a ripple effect but I am neither confirming nor denying anything.”

Guess we’ll all just have to wait and see what the MCU has in store.

Avengers: Infinity War is available to buy on Blu-ray, DVD or digital download. Avengers 4 will be released in the UK on April 26, 2019, and in the US on May 3, 2019.
