Many have been tipping Highlander hunk Sam Heughan to follow in Sean Connery’s footsteps, but there is another lad from the Lowlands who is closing fast. Fans have already started tweeting: “His name is Compston. Martin Compston!” The actor has starred as Anti-Corruption Unit Detective Sergeant Steve Arnott in the BBC drama Line of Duty in 2012, and impressed viewers again last year in the family drama The Nest. With his odds tumbling at the UK bookies, it’s not just his many devoted admirers who think he’s ready to go on Her Majesty’s Secret Service.

Compston’s fans are increasingly vocal about their 007 hopes, with one declaring: “So after watching all 5 series of Line of Duty on BBC iPlayer I’m just gonna put this out there, anyone else think Martin Compston would be brilliant as the next James Bond?”

Another said: “Next James Bond? How about Martin Compston? Just watched “The Nest”. Always a great actor, but on this one he is on fire. Gravitas, energy, the whole nine yards.”

No wonder UK bookies have started turning their attention to Compston as the next Bond.

British TV drama already yielded up one iconic Bond star, Pierce Brosnan, and three of the current leading favorites to take over as 007: The Bodyguard’s Richard Madden, Peaky Blinders’ Cillian Murphy and Bridgerton’s Regé-Jean Page.

The Bodyguard creator Jed Mercurio is also behind Line of Duty and the show’s new star Kelly MacDonald has been raving that the upcoming series “feels a bit like being the new Bond or something.”

UK bookies Ladbrokes just told Express Online: “With Line Of Duty fans eagerly awaiting the show’s return this weekend and the race to replace Daniel Craig well and truly on, there’s every chance the name could soon be Compston; Martin Compston.”

Interest is likely to peak in the build-up to Sunday, with the show’s actors and writers promising a major escalation in the scale of the drama and action.

Compston himself said: “Every time it comes back gets bigger and bigger, it’s exciting and terrifying. One thing I will say, there’s a lot of big questions that get answered this year.

“Personally, speaking on behalf for all of us, series three was a culmination of series one, two and three and then with series four, five and six, it was building for this big climate in series six. A lot of people’s questions will get answered.”

Off-screen the star shows just as much strength and tough-talking as he does in the show.

He married American aspiring actress Tianna Flynn in 2016 and they are based in Las Vegas.

Compston has launched equally blistering attacks on people who suggested he lived in the US to avoid paying UK taxes, and those who criticise his accent in Line of Duty.

Compston said: “It kinda gets on my f***ing nerves. If I went to St Andrews or Eton and I had a ski chalet in Switzerland or a villa in the South of France, certain people would think you’re fit to run the country… But I’m from Greenock, I’m working class and I’ve done well for myself.

“I get abuse daily on Twitter but you kinda put up with it. It’s where we’re from, you’ve got to have a thick skin. But it’s not fun at times, it can go a bit dark.”

Similarly, Compston has no time for anyone trying to find fault with his acting.

He said: “Now people know I’m Scottish…  with that it becomes an added thing that people are accent detectives…they’ll look back at series four, 27 minutes and say ‘oh your accent slipped there’… like, take a day off pal.”

Despite his fearless and forthright manner, he is deeply protective and tight-lipped about his home life.

Although he posed with Tianna in late 2019 proudly showing off a baby bump, he simply announced that he was a father in March 2020. No further details of their child have ever been revealed in public.

SCROLL DOWN FOR LATEST JAMES BOND ODDS TO REPLACE DANIEL CRAIG

Line of Duty: Martin Compston discusses filming new series

At the moment Compston is still an outsider in the race to replace Craig. Ladbrokes currently have him at 20/1, but it is likely those odds will tumble further after the weekend.

Ladbrokes spokesman Alex Apati told us today: “James Norton and Tom Hardy remain locked at the head of the betting as joint-favourites at 2/1 apiece, with Rege-Jean Page now a 6/1 shot with Sam Heughan.”

Luther star Idris Elba has seen his odds of replacing Daniel Craig slashed to just 5/1, from 6/1 – putting him firmly among the frontrunners in the betting. Superman star Henry Cavill is also still in the game at 10/1.

Line of Duty returns for Season 6 on Sunday March 21 on BBC One.
