Black Panther 2 is one of the MCU’s most highly-anticipated sequels, as an impressive ensemble will return to dazzle us with breathtaking visual spectacles and intrigue us with sociopolitical relevance and questions concerning identity preservation. Who said Marvel movies lack depth; who called them theme parks?
Black Panther 2 has some mighty shoes to fill narratively speaking, yet introducing the MCU’s next “big bad” to follow in Thanos’ footsteps may reward this movie with quite an integral narrative responsibility.
While rumor has it that Ororo Munroe (Storm) may join the soiree, new insider reports suggest that the film will be used as a vehicle for introducing the next villain to take center stage, and considering the MCU timeline at play, the leak seems grounded.
Doctor Doom may feature as the main villain in ‘Black Panther 2’
According to We Got This Covered, Charles Murphy (an industry insider) has reported that Victor Von Doom may serve as the primary antagonist in the Black Panther sequel. The information Murphy received suggests that Doctor Doom will be looking to expand his empire, by invading parts of Africa, which will obviously put him up against T’Challa when he tries to conquer Wakanda.
While this “leak” seems juicy and realistic, it has yet to receive corroboration from a secondary source, as We Got This Covered notes; thus, it’s important to consider this a plausible rumor at this stage in the game; plausible, even moreso, because earlier rumors suggested Marvel was already attempting to cast the villain.
Rumor has it that Marvel was looking to cast Viggo Mortensen, Hugh Jackman, or Michael Fassbender in the role a while back. Considering many presumed this character’s appearance would be way down the line, casting rumors felt out of place — too early. However, if Marvel is looking to cast Doctor Doom for an appearance in Black Panther 2, casting speculation would be a bit more grounded, and such a movie would likely segue into Phase 5.
‘Black Panther 2’ will come towards the end of Phase 4
While most of Marvel’s Phase 4 will be confined to 2020 and 2021, Black Panther isn’t set to premiere until May 2022. WandaVision, Black Widow, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, The Eternals, Shang-Chi, Doctor Strange, and more will all proceed the second Black Panther; meaning, T’Challa’s standalone installment could be one of the last movies of Phase 4 and supply the major villain entrance, setting up Phase 5.
Marvel is not ready for another big baddie — not yet — as Thanos is still fresh in fans’ minds. However, after 2022, Thanos will be a villain of the past, several new Avengers will be on the team, and a new threat — requiring some sort of mash-up — will be relevant once more.
Not to mention, Doctor Doom provides a direct connection to the Fantastic Four via Reed Richards (Mister Fantastic), which would also set the MCU up to introduce those four iconic saviors who deserve a half-decent movie. It’s time we get Doctor Doom and the Fantastic Four done right.
