Why Rafa Benitez is being replaced by Graeme Souness as pundit on MNF

Rafa Benitez has pulled out of being an analyst on Sky Sports Monday Night Football show.

The under pressure Newcastle boss has been due to review the weekend’s action before Arsenal play Leicester .

But he has cancelled the rare appearance, concluding it would not be a good look with Newcastle bottom of the league.

Benitez will be replaced by Graeme Souness.

Sky’s Jamie Carragher is a friend of Benitez and helped persuade him to come on the show and share his expertise.

Benitez has previously resisted doing much punditry, because of it’s personality based approach. He prefers to pick clips of games and give proper tactical insight, and had hoped to do that on MNF.

Benitez had his Newcastle squad in for training on Sunday preparing for the trip to Southampton next week.

Newcastle have had their worst start to a top flight campaign since 1898, winless in nine games with five consecutive defeats at home.

Benitez spoke briefly to Mike Ashley after the defeat to Brighton and was told it was business as usual.
