The Queen and Prince Philip Ring in His 99th Birthday with a New Portrait

Prince Philip turns 99 tomorrow, and to ring in the milestone birthday, he and Queen Elizabeth II have posed for a regal new portrait at their home at Windsor Castle.

The image, snapped on June 2 by a Press Associate photographer, features the couple, who have been married for 73 years, side by side. Her Majesty is wearing a floral dress by Angela Kelly, her personal wardrobe adviser, with the Cullinan V diamond brooch—an 18-carat, heart-shaped piece she inherited from Queen Mary in 1953. The Duke of Edinburgh is all suited up in a Household Division tie.

The photo marks a rare appearance from the royal couple, who have been staying at Windsor rather than their official residence at London’s Buckingham Palace as the coronavirus lockdown continues.

Despite staying indoors, the queen is continuing to do what work she can remotely. Just last week, she thanked first responders and other essential workers in honor of Volunteers Week in the U.K. She has also delivered speeches from her home, including an uplifting televised appearance during which she addressed the worldwide medical crisis.

“We should take comfort that while we may have more still to endure, better days will return: We will be with our friends again; we will be with our families again; we will meet again,” she said in an early April speech.
