Strictly’s Layton Williams responds after he’s branded ’embarrassing’ by viewer

Strictly: Layton Williams announces he’s joined the cast of 2023

Layton Williams has addressed a Twitter user who labelled him “embarrassing” for his “camp” demeanour in Strictly Come Dancing 2023.

The Billy Elliot stage actor, 29, said he refused to “butch up” for anyone as he blasted the “internalised homophobia” that he felt has been directed at him.

The original tweet to Layton in view of his 50,000 followers read: “U don’t need to be so camp. It’s embarrassing to us gays.”(sic)

In response, the West End performer joked: “Maybe I’ll butch it up for you week 2!”

However, he later responded with a further defiant message after the initial derogatory tweet to him was removed.

Layton typed: “Internalised homophobia gay deleted their tweet but I was only kidding ya’ll.

“Obvs I won’t be butching it up for no one! xxx.”(sic)

His fans were overjoyed with his response as they shared that they were looking forward to watching his first Strictly performance.

Another user typed: “Looking forward to seeing and getting to know you in all your glory. Can’t wait to see yours and Nikita’s first dance.”

A second added: “You do you. Don’t change for anyone.”

While a third remarked: “I didn’t know you before Strictly, but I love you already! Good luck on Saturday.”

Last Saturday night it was revealed Layton would be dancing in the competition with professional Nikita Kuzmin.

The duo addressed backlash over his performance background while being interviewed by show host Claudia Winkleman.

Nikita said: “Ballroom and Latin are completely different to anything Layton has done so far, the technique, posture and especially coordination is completely different, he has a lot to learn and I can’t wait to teach him.”

Layton also had his say about the pairing, adding: “He is going to whip me into shape, and keep me on the straight and narrow because I do like to think I know what I am doing and do the most, but I really don’t have a clue!”

As the show aired, some viewers once again suggested he had “an unfair advantage”, while many fans of the show and actor Layton were quick to hit back at this, once again pointing out he is not trained in the dances he will be learning.
