Serena Williams' Reminder to Be Confident Is a $600 Necklace

Serena Williams is one of the most talented athletes in the world. She and her sister Venus Williams have been in the spotlight since their early years, smashing records, breaking barriers, and inspiring millions. On top of that, Williams has netted some serious endorsement deals that have brought her net worth to a staggering $200 million and made her the face of high-profile brands like Nike.

It’s hard to imagine someone with that level of success needing a confidence boost, but Williams definitely faces pressure from the fame and works to get into the right headspace to keep going. Interestingly, a piece of jewelry helps remind her to be confident in who she is.

A lifelong passion fuels Serena Williams’ success

Raising his five daughters in Michigan, Williams’ father taught her and her sister tennis from a very young age. By the age of three, Williams was practicing two hours a day, and in 1991, all that hard work and dedication paid off. Williams ranked first in the 10-and-under division and was well on her way to fame.

The Williams sisters were credited not just with immense talent in the sport of tennis but also with changing the way the game is played. They focused on a kind of powerful strength that made their explosive performances fan favorites.

Along the way, Williams racked up accolades and accomplishments. She turned pro in 1995 and quickly set the world on fire with her flare, talent, and style. She bested her sister to the first Grand Slam title in 1999. The pair teamed up to take the Olympic gold medal in 2008 and again in 2012. In 2017, she won her 23rd Grand Slam title after squaring off with her sister for the honor.

The road to this level of success was not always easy. In addition to the hard work that Williams put in to stay in top shape, Williams also had to learn to deal with the disappointment of defeat.

In 2003, Williams underwent knee surgery and lost her half-sister to a tragic murder. The results of recovery and mourning seemed to take a toll on Williams’ focus, and many wondered if her career was burning out.

Of course, we now know that she came back as strong as ever and has made some of her most impressive wins since that time. She credits her focus on mental health with her ability to bounce back from hard times and continue to achieve at such a high level year after year.

“Something I do every day is [to] completely turn my brain off, which sounds weird but because I work so much between tennis and running my other properties—Serena Ventures and Serena Clothing. But it’s a lot so I just need to turn my brain off and not think about anything,” the talented athlete explained.

A necklace helps Serena Williams stay confident

In an article for New York Magazine, Williams expounded about some of her favorite things. Among those items — which included her Beats wireless headphones and Pat McGrath lipstick — was a necklace from her own jewelry line. The necklace is a $600 14k yellow gold chain with the word “queen” set with diamonds.

Explaining why the necklace means so much to her, Williams said, “I try to emulate a powerful, confident persona, like a queen, as much as I can, but I’m not perfect.” She went on to say that the word “queen” was meant as “a reminder to give yourself love and admiration. Even when you may not feel like a queen, the jewelry is there to remind you that you are one.”
