Rio Ferdinand has revealed that he knew he was going to have a baby with wife Kate Ferdinand as soon as they couple started dating in 2017.

Speaking about his relationship with his wife on Gabby Logan’s Mid Point podcast, Rio, 42, explained: "Kate came in and really sacrificed everything for us. I wasn’t going to sit there and say actually, I don’t think you should have any kids.”

The former footballer added: “I knew from the get go as soon as I met her, and we started forming a relationship and she integrated into the family that a baby was going to be inevitable. It was just a matter of when. And luckily we’ve been able to have no problems and the baby is here.”

Kate and Rio were introduced to each other by friends while they were both holidaying in Dubai in 2016 and began dating the following year. The got married in 2019 and welcomed their first baby together, Cree, just before Christmas.

When they got together, Kate became a stepmother to Rio’s three children with his late wife, Rebecca. The couple had Lorenz, 14, Tate, 12, and Tia, nine, before Rebecca passed away aged 34 in May 2015 after a short battle with breast cancer.

Rio opened up about becoming a single father in a moving documentary, while a second documentary followed Kate’s journey to becoming a stepmother a few years later.

Kate, who has been sharing honest updates since having baby Cree late last year, recently said she doesn’t want to have another child after being “wiped out” by Cree’s traumatic birth.

When asked about the prospect of expanding her brood recently, she said: "If you ask me right now I would say never ever again. Our house is very hectic as it is.

"We have four kids and two dogs, it's a madhouse. The thought of having another one makes me slightly anxious."

The blonde beauty went on to admit that while she may not be ready for another baby now, she's open to the idea at a later stage. She added: "I'm only 29 but I feel 39 at the moment! But you never know, I might feel different in a few years."

The TV personality continued by explaining toMail Onlinethat she wanted to show the realities of becoming a new mum rather than always posting glamorous snaps of herself.

She said: "I felt like I would just be lying if I didn't tell the truth. I didn't just want to upload a picture of myself looking great, because it's just not real.

"I've felt some sort of release from doing it. I was a bit nervous before and sometimes social media can be a real negative but it's been positive for me since I posted my experiences.

"I felt like I was scrolling on Instagram and everybody was looking so amazing after having a baby," she said. "They were in these tight little trousers and I was looking at myself thinking, 'I don't look like this.'"
